My 8 months baby seems to suffer from flipping over unintentionally in the middle of the night. She is like unable to control her body muscles and flip over mid of her sleep which waking her up and play for hours. I tried wedges and ways to soothe her as she normally will start frowning waving her hand left and right, turning her body left and right with her eyes closed... in 20 minutes she would flip over and open her eyes, then she will play for hours though she is sleepy. She cried with her eyes closed when she felt something is stopping her to turn like wedges or myself holding her back from turning. This problem causes her unpleasant sleep at night in return a nagging baby in the day. I really am tired physically and mentally like a zombie...can anyone help me?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the advices. One of my problem is we are sharing a room with my baby though she is sleeping on her own crib. When she woke up she hold on the crib standing there screaming and shouting at us. Apart from this nightmare, she is in terribly bad mood in the day due to unpleasant sleep...a totally different baby as she used to be... I am so down looking at her crying over everything and nothing seems to be of interest to her... I hope she would get well soon... i really am depressed!

My son does that. He was also a very noisy baby while sleeping. I have to keep the monitor down a little bit and put fans in his and my room as background noises because he'll wake us up all night. He wakes up but is able to go back to sleep. I think this is a phase and she should get past this soon. Hang in there!! Is there a way to move her to her own room so she doesn't keep you up? Good luck!!

Please remove the wedge and do not try to flip her back over etc...At 8 months she is more mobile. Keep the crib free of toys and too many blankets. If she wakes up from flipping over and plays let it be...She'll learn to go back to sleep on her own. Do not pick her up or she will get used to that and creates another problem.

She's too old for the wedges, please take them out. Once a baby can naturally flip themselves over, it's okay. You can correct it if you see it, but really, now that baby has control over her body, the wedges pose more of a threat than a safety device. Let her play a little, as long as it's not totally interrupting her sleep patterns (meaning, waking YOU up). Let her learn to self sooth and fall back asleep.

I would suggest doing what you can to move her out of the room. Even if your baby cannot hear or see you, he/she can smell you and even sense you. If you get into the habit of constantly going over to her in the middle of the night it could create a whole new problem of continuous night wakings and lack of sleep. Just leave her alone and allow her to self-soothe. And getting her out of your room will be much easier for the both of you.

this is normal! Remove everything from the bed, because the next step is when she starts pulling herself up.....

& as a head's up, my sons were doing this at 6 months....& pulling up to stand before 8 months. It's coming.....be prepared!

& as other posters said, leave her alone....let her learn to self-soothe & she'll be fine.

Have you tried putting a mobile over her crib so that she can focus on an object when flipped over, and then when the urge is there to play, focusing on the object moving will slowly put her back to bed and let her get the rest she needs. Keep the lights low. Also, sometimes because you share a room even though she is in her crib, she can sense your presence and automatically feel the need to "wake up". Try putting the crib in another room close by so you can monitor her but give her enough space not to be distracted by your presence, your breathing and any other noise that might suggest to her it is time to wake up and play.

Time to move the crib to another room. It should be totally dark and silent at night. She is ready to be in her own space and learn to go back to sleep on her own..

You cannot stop them from growing up and meeting milestones.

Just keep her room dark, the bed empty and let her learn how to go back to sleep on her own..

Hang in there mom, you are on the ride of your life..

Totally normal. All babies go through that phase. Oftentimes, when they learn a new skill they practice it at night and this wakes them up. As Sue H said, other milestones will follow: pulling up and not being able to get back down, sitting up, crawling, etc. You're little guys will learn now to not let it interrupt his sleep. You just have to give him more time.

It that age we nursed our kids to sleep or bottle-fed to sleep every night. So when they woke in the middle of the night, we picked them up and put them back to sleep again.

It's just a phase, and she will grow out of it.

At 8 months this is ok and I stressed too BUT just keep the crib free of everything! No blankets, toys, crib bumpers...I used sleep sacks so they can be covered and not get cold.

Sleep sacks can be found online or at Toys/babies R Us....they are like personal cozy blankets for babies that have arm holes and zip up the front or back...worth every penny! Good luck!
