Hey all!! I would like to know when some of you started feeding your babies three times a day? Not heavy food, but cereal mixed with fruits. I feed her some in the morning and evening, but the hubby seems to think she wants more.

P.S. She is formula fed.

What can I do next?

V.,

I just took my little girl in for her four month check up. We had been feeding her rice cereal with applesauce once a day for over a month (formula fed also), but she still seemed hungry so I had tried a second feeding. Her doctor told me that what she recommended was for breakfast to feed her rice cereal with fruit, and then two more servings during the day of just fruit or veggies, no cereal. Since I've started doing this she's been much happier, sleeping better and doing well. Now I don't know if this will work for you, but think about it if you're little one is still acting hungry. Oh and good luck with the second baby, just remember that we're all here for you if you need anything.

If she seems hungry you could give it to her three times a day.

V.,

My baby didn't start eating 3 times a day until she was almost 7 months. She would eat in the afternoon and evening, but not breakfast. I would put her in her high chair and try to feed her in the morning, but she only wanted to nurse until the afternoon. I just listened to what she wanted and eventually she wanted that third meal... then a fourth and a fifth :-D
5 months old may be a little early for 3 meals, but if she's active she may need it. Like the other responder said, you can ask your pediatrician, too.

Hi V., welcome to motherhood.

My kids are now grown, but when they were small I introduced solid foods at about 4 months. My philosophy was to give about a tablespoon of fruits or veggies blended with just a bit of cereal and I gave it to them several times a day. No rigid time schedules.

I bought a blender and made almost everything I fed them. Any veggies or fruit that we had during the day was used (without seasoning, salt or sugars). Blend with sterilized water or formula.

If your little girl is taking ample amounts of formula that is probably enough and it is what she needs the most of. If her weight is good and she is gaining a reasonable amount each month that is an important guide as to how much extra food she needs.

Some babies get overfed and that is not good for them either. Since you are home with her all day, you probably have a better estimation of her food needs than her daddy who is at work all day.

You have fun and enjoy your little ones.

Blessed be,
Merylyn (aka Mommie Salami a pet name given by my daughter who entered
my name on this Momma Source list)

My pediatrician told me not to start solids until six months old and then it was suppose to be cereal and veggies and fruit. One serving size is half a tablespoon and she was suppose to have about 3 servings a day for starters. That was 2 1/2 years ago so the info may have changed so I would call your baby's doc and ask the nurse on duty (you probably won't even have to set up a check up although I'm guessing you'll be getting one at 6 months anyway).

Congrats on baby #2 :)

Hi V.!
First of all congratulations on baby #2! My girls are 13 months apart so I know how you feel. If you ever need to talk, please drop me a kine.
As to feedings, with both my girls I didn't start feeding them 3 meals a day until they were about 8 months old. She should still be getting most of her nutrition through the formula, but talk to your doctor if you have questions. Also, you might want to check out babycenter.com. They have some great feeding charts on there site.
Wishing you lots of healthy vibes and restful nights.
J.

V.,

Just wanted to let you know that the response from Nancy (my mom) was actually from me. We occasionally share the same laptop and I wasn't aware that she was signed in.

Good luck.
