Infant Baby Eczema - Fort Collins, CO

Do you know what is causing the eczema? My oldest son has a milk allergy and had eczema. Once I completely eliminated the milk, his eczema went away. (I am not suggesting a milk allergy, but it can be related to food allergies)

Move to a more humid state??? We have considered it and looked at other cities for this very reason. I guess consult a doctor for something stronger, but it's so dry here, not much seems to help consistently.

You can take more of the non high vitamin stuff to get benefits. Do not be afraid of the Vitamin A content. Every single study done about vitamin A toxicity was done with synthetic vitamin A, not natural.

My children suffer from it too, especially the second oldest. Try Vanicream for everyday use (you'll have to order it through the pharmacist) as for severe breakouts, talk to your pediatrician or a dermatologist. There are plenty of ointments out there that they can prescribe...make sure it is an ointment once the eczema is severe and the skin is broken...a cream will often burn and cause more discomfort than relief. My son suffers from eczema since birth and the things I have found that work are, elidel, aquaphor (over the counter), Boudreax's Butt Paste (also over the counter, sounds bad but really really works great). Eczema is so hard to cure here in Colorado becuase of the climate but you can control it to almost cured. Limit the amount of baths and water on affected areas also helps alot. The good thing about aquaphor and butt paste is that you can use it on the face if needed. Some of the other stuff you can't. My son has it all over his body, legs, hands, arms, face. We also use Cetiphil lotion between baths, works really good.

My son has the same problem on his hands and the doctor told me to put chapstick on them instead of cortozone or lotion during the day, it keeps them moisturized and its not harmful if they put the chapstick in their mouths. Good Luck.

My 2 year old has terrible eczema. I took him to a pediatric dermatologist at Children's Hospital and there's no real fix to keep it healed. I have a prescription of Triamcinolone ointment for my son. It seems to work when applied 2-4 times a day, even when he's not obviously flared up. My pediatrician recommended a "wet wrap" my son. Whatever area is affected, you apply the medicine IMMEDIATELY after bathing, then cover with warm wet clothing (whether it be socks for the hands and feet, or full jammies for extreme flare ups) and then cover with a dry article of clothing. You are to leave it like this overnight. I do it to my son's feet all the time. You can see a considerable difference in the softness and redness by morning, but unfortunately, eczema never stays healed. There are so many environmental factors that it's difficult to prevent flare ups. I have been reassured that the triamcinolone is safe to use on hands. Won't cause illness if ingested over long periods of time. You might give it a try. Elidel did not work for us. It caused EXTREME dryness. I wouldn't recommend it.

There is a cream called Bag a balm. You actually find it in the pet department It is in a green can. I was told by my Pedatrician to use it on diaper rash and the diaper rash that was terriable was gone the next day. Sincew then I have put it on everything and it has worked. It stops the itching and burning. It does have a slight odor But works like a dream. I even got my sister in law hoooked on it. What also may work is Aveeno Dry skin cream. Hope this helps

yep, i'm another one that thought it was eczema! my girls had it since the days they were born! 4 years later (2 years for my youngest) we found out they have food allergies, for them it's any kind of tree nut (pecans, walnut, almond) and legumes (PEANUTS ARE LEGUMES, soy, chocolate, vanilla, etc.) i delt with 3 different kinds of lotions & creams (some steroid) every day for 4 years! i even fought with my daughters' dr. to find out i was right! get the allergy test as soon as possible. i know with the nut and legume allery it only gets worse with each exposure, and now we can't leave home with out our Epipens. my children can't even eat at mcdonalds!

Hi, my daughter developed excema at around age 2. We found that flaxseed - about a tbsp a day mixed in something like applesauce controlled it well (you can get it in the flour section at Trader Joes very cheaply). Then another doctor prescribed zyrtec - it worked like a miracle. I don't know if either of these could be given to a 10 month old - your doctor should know. Anyway, my daughter is now age 6 and has outgrown the eczema which is a real relief. Good luck!

My 2 year old son has suffered extreme eczema sine he was 6 weeks old. The only thing that worked for him (when he was raw and bleeding) was Hydrocortizone 2.5%, which is not reccomended for babies. It is also not safe to be ingested or to be put on the face(so also not good for the hands). We did not use it more then 4 weeks, as it was only a temporary fix.

If you are interested in using a natural product, we had good luck using Florasone by Boericke & Tafel. Shea butter is an amazing moisturizer as well. You can find both in most health food stores.

We decided to go the natural path personally, as the skin creams don't get to the root of the problem. Of course I don't know your sons situation, but my son has major food sensitivities. I found out what he reacted to by doing a elimination diet with him(and myself). We are now trying to avoid gluten, corn, dairy, eggs (and a whole array of other foods!)for a full year to see if he outgrows the sensitivity to all those foods"(as reccomended by our allergist). And hopefully avoid them turning into full blown food "allergies". We also supplement him with acidolphalus and fish oil.

I know what it's like to be in your situation!! Both of my son's had ezcema!! The ped. for our oldest gave him hydrocortisone, which I found out later was TOXIC! We used Arbonne on both of them and within DAYS the ezcema was practically gone!! I am actually a Regional Vice President, Independent Consultant with them. Where do you live? Have you ever heard about Arbonne? All the products are pure, safe, and beneficial, so there's nothing harmful!

Also, sometimes what can cause irritations of the skin/ezcema are the soaps/washes that you are using on them!

I feel your pain!! My son was 4 months when his body became overcome by eczema. I took him to specialist after specialist and they really didn't offer me anything worthwhile. I have tried everything you have and found that when he had bad outbreaks (he gets the worst on his feet, inside of his elbows, and the back of his knees) I kept him covered in Vaseline. My children had eczema as well. I actually found out it was because they had food allergies, milk and soy. Are you nursing and having these products? If that is not it, some other things we have tried successfully - Cetaphil both the lotion and the soap. ONe of my children can only do Dove soap and Aquaphor while my son can only do Cetaphil soap and lotion. My friend uses Baby berts bee products and my other friend uses Metalluca's lotion.

The food allergy was the best solution though.

My 2yr old son is prone to eczema also. We use Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream (I think we got it at Walgreens?)
Also, I give him acidophilus supplements. I read somewhere that eczema may be a symptom of an imbalanced digestive system. Anyway, between the cream and the acidophilus, we've got the eczema under control.

My little guy (just turned 2) has had it since he was an infant also. His Pediatrician gave us a prescription cream but it made it even more red, so I told him and he gave us another that seems to work. Not sure if it's okay to put in mouth (he has always had on wrists, top of hands & back of knees but not fingers...)but your Ped. should know...
There is also something called SkinZinc you can look up on the internet...we did try that and it seemed to help also, but it has not been FDA approved, so they have to put on there to use on 18 & older. Good Luck!

My son who is now 5 has had eczema since he was 1 year. The doctor put him on a small steriod cream which cures it pretty good. He was Elidil at first which did great and now it's a generic steriod.... It is generally caused by a food allergy and stays with them for life... just to let ya know... Find out what the baby is allergic too..... But with the rash until you can get the cream, besides a hydro cortozone, get a lotion that has a moisturizer in it like lubridurm, Keri, or what ever works for the child..... That is what has worked for my son...

Sara, When my son was a baby he had this, too. I used Lansinoh. It's pure lanolin, used for sore nipples while breast feeding, so I know it's ok if your son digests a little, plus it has no oder.

My first suggestion like many others is to talk to your pediatrician. They are probably going to have your best solution whether it be a perscription or something over the counter. My son (20 months) has a little patch of eczema and we use AVEENO BABY (not the generic it's not the same)SOOTHING RELIEF MOISTURE CREAM w/natural Colloidal Oatmeal. It is formulated to soothe & relieve dry skin...Even dry skin from eczema. We also use it on his cheeks they get red & chapped easily.

Dear S., I am the mother oaf an 8 yr. old and a 6 yr old. My 8 yr old has had eczema since the day he was born. It is hereditary. It gets so bad especially during the winter. We took him to our doctor and he prescribed Betamethasone Dipropionate cream USP,0.05%. It is a miracle cream. He also gets it on his face and feet. The name I gave you is generic. You can also go to drugs.com and look it up. My husband and my father-inlaw have it as well. We tried Ellidel as well but with no success. This cream is the only one that we have found that works. Caution: they are not suppose to apply it and go in the sun so we apply it at night. The type that he has on his hands is harder to get ride of. I would talk to his doctor and ask him about it. I came down with this during each of my three pregnancies....and it hasn't started to flare up again after leaving every time I've delivered. I have found that pure coconut oil like you can buy in health food stores, seems to do do the trick! It has a lot of great properties to it, but best of all, it's natural and consumable (i.e. putting it on a baby who may suck at its' hands.) It was just something I tried, since I've used it for other ailments - but it has worked!

My daughter was on a perscription from her doctors office and that was the only thing that helped her. Have you had him tested for allergies? My daughters was a milk allergy that she outgrew by the time she was 15 months, but my nephew had the same thing when he was an infant and it turns out to this day(he's 4) he has a severe milk and soy allergy. I would definetly talk to his doctor about it soon, especially since he is kind of struggliung with it. I wouldn't wait to take him until his year visit.

S., I work in the medical industry and have studied eczema quite a bit lately with a new product launch. When children have eczema they are "skin barrier dysfunctional." Your skin barrier is made up of Collagen, Keratin, and Hyaluronic Acid. Lotions and creams are typically made with a water and oil emulsion or even alcohol, which is one of the WORST things you can put on eczematic skin. Vaseline and Bag Balm work as an additional barrier, but are very greasy, and will stain clothes, sheets, and your child will soon grow tired of using/wearing it. Steriods come with a black box warning and are not indicated in young children, and will cause thinning of the skin and can cause permanent skin damage. And Vanimide is a keratolytic lotion which actually causes shedding of the skin, increasing moisture loss. A new product was launched a few months ago and many of the peds have samples. It is called Hylira, and it is made of water and hyaluronic acid. It essentially replaces the bodies' depleted hyaluronic acid and adds water to the skin. When the skin is hydrated it doesn't cause the itch-scrath cycle that eventually leads to eczema flare ups. Email me your pediatricians name and I will make sure they have samples- and you can try it. Because it is 99% water it has no taste and is not harmful if ingested.

My 13 month-old is going through the same thing. My doctor told me to give my son Benadryl for the itching because as long as it itches he'll keep scratching. I'd talk to your pediatrician about giving it to him and how much. When he was 2 to 4 months old my thumb sucking son had sores on both thumbs it did eventually heal but the key is going to be getting him to stop itching.

My 10 month son has eczema. It showed it's ugly head when he was 2 months. It was a severe case, head to toe. We were referred by our Dr. to the National Jewish Hospital. They have an amazing program there for allergies, asthma, and eczema. We saw Dr. Boguniewicz (Dr. B). He was great! He recommeneded that we give our son a bath every night to keep the skin moist. He also perscribed for his body Fluticasone 0.05% Cream, and Elidel for his facial breakout. Once his skin was clear do this routine everyother day. It has been 8 months and he has not had one break out.... His skin is perfect!

Melaluca oil (not sure on the spelling). It works wonders....they make just about everything from it, so you can actually wash your son's clothes with laundry soap made from it to help reduce it. It's completely completely natural. They have some cream products that worked miracles with my friend's daughter. If it's really bad, you can try undiluted melaluca oil.

I am a pharmacist and I would recommend to try Neutrogena Body Emulsion. They carry it at Walmart and Target (I think). I had alot of trouble with my son. He was on prescriptions and nothing seemed to work. This lotion for some reason has really worked and he has not been on prescriptions since.

My girlfriend's daughter had eczema too. She was told that 80% of cases are allergy-related, but her dr. wouldn't test for it. At almost 2 yrs old, she found out she had mold in her house & had to move into a hotel while they fixed it. It cleared almost immediately & she hasn't had it since (she's 5 now). Definitely check into a possible allergy.

My 4 year old has food allergies and pretty bad eczema at times. Immediately after bath try putting vanacream or vaseline on. Another pretty good option would be Acid Mantle (works wonders for us but its pricey!). I would put it on again a couple of times a day too. You might need to use a prescription strength hydrocortisone for a while and once it clears use on of the other crealy lotions to keep it gone.

Have you recently added egg or dairy into your son's diet? You might also ask your doctor about allergy testing. The eczema and crankiness were the only 2 signs of my son's allergies to peanuts and eggs.
