Baby Eating Solids

I know there are always issues with babies and eating. We recently started my 5 and 1/2 month old on solids. We did a week of Earth's Best Rice cereal and now have started bananas. He seemed to like the cereal if there was apple juice mixed in. Now, it seems like he does not really want more than a few bites of either. We are offering him both, once in the morning and once in the evening. I usually nurse him about 5:30am, then feed him food around 6:30-7:30, depending on when he wakes up, then in the evenings, we feed food in between evening nursing and nighttime bottle.
I wonder if he is not hungry, does not like the food, or what? Also, I noticed his BMs change once we introduced bananas. It almost looked like chunky banana strings in his diaper. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

The one thing I've realized is that there's no such thing as normal. He may not be very hungry. Don't push. Remember you're adding them, not replacing the milk and there'll be plenty of time for solids & all their mess. I'd go easy on the bananas too. My daughter would eat them like crazy & then got constipated. Their insides are very sensitive, so just keep it simple & go slow. Follow his lead.

Good Luck!

I would offer the solids before breastfeeding. That's how my son was. If I gave him solids first, he still ate plenty when breastfeeding. Also, his Bw will change considerably. They'll be probably less of them eventually and they'll be a different consistency than before. Unfortunately they'll also be smellier! :)

K.,
Is he by chance cutting teeth? My 7 month old daughter would eat a TON of cereal and then she started to refuse it. I discovered that she was cutting teeth. Now that her teeth have broken through she is eating fine. About the BM's I think that's totally normal when you introduce solids. Good luck!

Hi - my daughter did not like regular rice cereal either. She does like the banana flavored rice cereal you can buy. Then it is safer on their system. Good luck!

From what I have herd alot of babies have trouble with bananas or dislike them. My son hates them. If you are wanting to start friuts try pears or apples they seem to be thinner and lighter on taste. Also i recieved this chart when my son was born maybe it can help. http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s211/zoe_and_landonsmo...

All of my children had trouble digesting bananas, made them constipated. I would think if he didn't like the food he would gag or something...that's what all of mine did. If all he wants is a few bites, start him out like that let him adjust and let his body adjust to the new stuff. Good luck.

Have you tasted the liquidy banana? I always thought it was nasty. Neither of my kids liked the canned banana flavors (and they seem to put it in everything). They eat real bananas just fine, but the baby jar bananas were just gross. Try apple or pear and see if it goes any better.
