Baby Crying While Pooping

My son is 2 and half weeks old. He is breastfed and only has gas when I pump and feed him from a bottle, which I have only done once so far. He poops every time he eats and sometimes more. His poops have always been a seedy yellow. However, since he was a week old he has been crying right before and while he poops. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

it is probably because, before pooping... (like even for adults), there is sometimes bowel pain... which for adults, indicates that we then have to poop soon. For an infant... they don't know that... all they know, is that there is discomfort. Then their poop does come out. They don't know the bodily cues for it yet. All they know, is discomfort. Thus they cry.

My son as a baby, whenever he was going to poop, made a TON of noise and his face would turn all red. THEN a poop came out.

Your baby's poop consistency/color, is normal for a newborn.

For gas, you can try Mylicon infant gas drops. It works well.
And burp him during/after any feedings.

all the best,
Susan

Your son might have an anal fissure (tear in his rectum - usually just inside around the rim). Your pediatrician should know what to look for and it's pretty common for babies, toddlers, young adults.. heck even us adults to have them especially if he's had a lot of poo come out at once. You can get a prescription for an ointment that numbs the area down there so they can have a BM without pain. It usually takes 4-6 weeks to heal. The instructions say to let them sit in a warm bath (just enough to hit his little bottom) to help relax the booty area.

Another symptom of an anal fissure is if your baby/toddler/child does not have a BM for several days. It can be confused with constipation because the baby/toddler/child will not want to poo because they know it will hurt. My DD was 6 weeks and on 100% breast milk when she had her first and wouldn't go poo for entire week and then go 2-3 times in one day and of course cry each time =(

The Pedi (at the time) said it was natural, didn't bother to look for any issues and told me to give her white grape juice. Thankfully, our friend who is a Pediatric surgeon knew exactly what was causing the problem and said most Pediatricians will not look for anal fissures - you have to ask. Good luck and grats on your LO =)

you have great answers so far. I'll add, check for irritation on his little bottom. If stools are loose he probably isn't constitpated, but that stuff is toxic and can leave a lot of irritation. Try Burts Bees diaper ointment.

I wouldn't worry my 6month old cried everytime before she pooped. Until she was about 4-5 months old. Unless it is really runny or hard then I would call the doctor. My doctor told me they just have to get used to doing it.
