My little boy was very constipated at 5 weeks old and his doctor told me to mix one ounce of prune juice with 2 ounces of water and that did the trick.
I have an almost 6 month old baby girl and when she poops she cries and has tears coming down her face it hurts her. I don't know what to do to help her. It has been like this since she started eating solids. I have tried to give her more water to try and soften it up some. Has anyone else had this problem with thier baby? Please help if you can. Thank You

My doctor says to give them apple juice, apple sauce or peaches to help soften their stool. You can also add a tablespoon of light Karo syrup to her bottle, it causes the body to draw water into the stool and makes it easier for them to go and keeps them from getting constipated
Hey S., i know its heart breaking when they cry like that. My daughter had the same prpblem when she switched from breast milk to formula at 9 months. Im in the health and wellness industry so i had a lot of great advice.I had bean giving her a natural childrens multi-vitamin since birth but I started to give her a natural supplement that i take (smaller serving) and that worked great! The best thing was that i didnt have to worry about the aweful stuff they sell in stores (you never know whats in that stuff) If you like i can give a web site of where to get it!

My name is K.. I have not experienced this problem with my children but I have a few cousins and one nephew that has this problem. And as an EMT I would highly urge you to talk with your pediatrician about this. My nephew has been having this problem since he started solids as well and it only gets worse. There are things that your pediatrician can recommend and try for your child. I hope that I have been of help. If you would like to talk more please feel free to email me at ____@____.com
you can ask the dr bc they can give her med. to put in er milk or drink and it will help her my neice is having that problems and it help her
My little guy went through the same thing. I found that giving him 2 tbsps of Karo Syrup helped. I used a dropper (like what you would give tylenol in) to measure it out and he would take it with no problem. It helped him within a few hours. We have also used stage 1 prunes...worked wonders. Give it to her for a few days straight (we actually mixed it in with his last bottle of the night and added cereal- I know some people dont do that). After a few days he was not crying and screaming in pain. Good luck!
My daughter had a similar problem at 1 year and her Dr. said to give her 1/2 tsp of Milk of Magnesia once a day and that worked well for us. (You should definitly put a call in to the nurse to verify that is ok.)
You said, "since she started eating solids". At 6 months most Dr's recommend just starting cereal unless there are specific medical reasons to start earlier. If you are feeding her more then rice cereal you might want to talk to your Dr about that.
Best wishes!
hi actually yes i know how you feel both my kids has this problem.Have you asked the doctor to give them medicine for this i think mine is like duclax not sure but you have to give that to them every day they havent had a bowl movement it helps to loosen it up.Most of the time i know it sounds gross but when its so bad like that i used to kinda help my kids get it out any way i could.my grandma taught me to use something like a syringe and shoot warm soapy water in there buttand that will slowly loosen it up or supositories which work slowly also
S.,
I've been through this with 2 of my 4 kids. There is a catnip and fennel mix that I use that helps tremendously, and there is something called Little Tummies brand laxative drops, that is made from natural vegetable senna that works wonders. Let me know if you'd like more information. I know I gave mine fresh prune juice and it didn't work, but this stuff did and it'sperfectly safe for babies. Mine started getting it as young as 2 months old. Hope this helps!

She sounds like she is constipated and if she is eating much fruit that could be part of the problem. Water is good, but it might not be quite good enough to help, I would check into her diet, make sure she is not getting too much iron or fiber because sometimes it can clog you up instead of working the other way, then I would check out some natural remedies at your local health food store and see if you can find something safe for young infants that will help loosen her stool so she can pass it easily. I would also make sure you are giving her plenty of veggies along with fruit they can help keep things moving along as well.
Both of my kids were like that. Give her a half of a teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia and a half of a teaspoon of Karo syrup in the morning with breakfast (in a bottle works really good), and she should start doing better. Hope that helps!
(That advice came from my pediatrician, in case if you were wondering!)
I had this same problem with my first born. Our Dr suggested substituting 2 oz of her bottle intake with half apple prune juice mixed with half water. This can be found with the baby food food usually on the bottle shelf. You should see results in about 1-3 days. If her stools become too loose like she is sick then maybe cut back to every other day or so. Wait 3 days if they are still too loose then maybe every 3 days. It maybe that she only needs it once a week. We had to do everyday, but this worked wonders.
My daughter had a problem with hard stools at one point. I was told to give her a few spoonfuls (baby) of prunes each day or prune juice (2/3 water 1/3 prune juice). You could also try taking a thermometer and putting some vasoline on it and sticking it up her bottom a little ways to help the poo slide out easier. Also, if you use mylecon (gas medicine), I was told by the doctor that it can sometimes constipate them. Good luck, hope your little one gets some relief soon.
Childrens Fletcher Oil, in the laxitive section at walmart. Awesome stuff!!!!
When My oldest was first born, I had the same problem except mine got worse. we changed her formulas 4 times, but still no good. When she was about 4 or 5 months old, she popped blood vessels in her head from straining so hard and tore her behind hole 2 times. I switched drs. and took her to this old man who musta been a hundred. He told me NO rice ceral. If anything two tablespoons of oatmeal in the morning and at betime. He said no bananas of any kind and nothing with apples in it. Apple juice is okay because it is made from the skin, but the meat of the apple is binding as are bananas and rice. I had to scour the stores because babyfood fruits just about all contain apples. I did this and it cleared right up. She had never had tis problem again and she turned 14 this year. You can feed them these three things when they get older, just not right now
I know it sounds crazy, but put some pancake syrup in the bottle. I was having the same problems and my mother in law told me about the pancake syrup. I thought she meant Karo syrup but she meant the stuff that goes on pancakes! For some reason, that worked when the Karo wouldn't! Is she crying because her poop burns or because she's constipated? I probably should have asked that before. If from her poop burning, try to give her less acidic fruits and vegetables. If constipated, then the syrup should work. I know it kills you to hear your baby cry when they hurt like that - I don't see how my daughter passed some of hers as large and hard as they were - they made me hurt just looking at them!
We have a set of twins and one of them takes a laxative (no stimulants). He is very petite and would cry so hard when it would finally come out. At first we used baby pear juice, don't add water, it worked well until he started to eat more solids and that is when they put him on the laxative. Try the pear juice for three days, after the third day you should see a change. Good Luck!
Hi-
My daughter got constipated after we had to switch to rice milk due to a milk allergy, but she was older- about 10 months.
I'd definitely check with your Ped. I was shocked at how long a child can go without a poop before they call it "constipation"- like 10-14 days!!! They give you the song and dance about how it's different for each baby, but stress the pain that your daughter is in to the doctor. My daughter began holding it in because she associated pooping with pain. That's the LAST thing you want to happen. Most docs want you to try prunes, increased juice and water, etc. at home before trying medications.
None of the do at home stuff worked, so we had to add medications to help her poop. She's been on a medication now for about 2 1/2 years. It's non-habit-forming. Talk with you ped- there's no reason for your baby to be in pain!!
Good luck!
We've had problems from time to time, especially in the summer when it gets harder for us to keep her adequately hydrated. One word: prunes. My poor child has eaten them so often that she picks them out of the pantry voluntarily at 2 years old.
Hey S.. My daughter has the same problem cause she loves bread. What I like to do is give her wheat or raisin bread instead of white bread. I also put a little honey in her warm milk cause my mother told me that back in the day they always used that as a natural laxative. If all that fails they do have suppositories for children....take care.
Put a little bit, maybe a teaspoon, of Light Karosyrup in her bottle. Works great to help soften things up & constipation.
