Hello everyone! You all have been wonderful answering my questions about my newborns excessive crying, reflux and swallow test. I had the swallow test done. The great news is nothing is genetically wrong. There are no holes or blockages or anything like that! She only has mild to moderate reflux (we thought that was the problem before) and severe gas. I saw the xray and her entire lower half was full of gas bubbles! No wonder all the crying she is having gas pain! So my ped said that we just have to wait it out. That it would get better in time! Does anyone know any secrets? Advice?? Please!!!! My poor baby is miserable!

What can I do next?

HI! We used Gripe Water, available in Health Food stores like Chamberlains. It is more natural than Mylicon and seemed to us to work better. Another thing you could do is lay your daughter on her back and 'bicycle' her legs, pushing them in to her belly and then back out. This helped a lot too, as well as massaging the belly. I would think laying on her belly may help push it out too, or any activity where you can get her legs moving.

GOOD LUCK!
M.

Oh, this must be so stressful for you!
With the acid reflux, is she taking anything for that? If so that should also help with the gas. You can also massage her lower tummy to help alleviate the gas bubbles.

There are many remedies out there to keep their head elevated while they are sleeping (wedges, towels, etc) which helps tremendously with digestion and reflux problems, but we got a baby hammock when my son was 8 weeks old and he almost immediately started sleeping better and for longer periods of time. Check out http://www.ambybaby.com
It's an amazing product, my son slept in it until he was 6 months (But they can sleep in in longer). I was a pretty "by the book" kind of mom that didn't buy into a lot of those gimmicky things out there, but I was so glad I got the hammock! I have lent it to many friends who have also had great results with it and I know you can get them discounted on ebay. And it's relatively portable, so we could take it with us to grandmother's etc.

Anyways, good luck I hope your baby and your family find relief soon!

Try gripe water from the health food store, it had worked for me in the past.

I have found that if you walk with the baby parallel to the floor facing down with their bottom against your hips and just walk around this helps them to relieve the gas. It has something to do with the motoin. Also you can try laying the baby on their back and bring their feet close to their bottom with their legs on or close to their stomachs. My friend swears by this one.

I hope these work for you!!!

Hi J.,

Have you tried any infant massage on the abdomen? Also, you can lay baby on her back and bring her legs up to stomach and back down again repeatedly to release some gas or do the "bicycle" with her legs.

You can also research a list of foods to avoid (you're b-feedeing, right?) that seem to cause more gas in babies.

good luck!

All of the suggestions you've received are ones that I would also recommend, especially the massage. There are certain massage strokes and techniques that are particularly effective. For example, there is an "I love you" massage that you could google and get specific directions. There are also local practitioners that could help you with massage - Susan at Full Circle Yoga ###-###-####) and Paul Reynolds with Ped Care Unit ###-###-####) are two that I know of. Paul would also be able to recommend herbs that would be helpful. In addition, there is a product called Colic Ease that is wonderful for gas and more natural than even the gripe water. You can order it online or it is avaialble at some ped's offices (Sunshine Ped in Maitland has it - 407- ###-###-####). I wish you all the best.

Hi J., what a great relief that there is no structural problem. Your empathy for her pain is so strong..I know all you want to do is help her get through this. You may want to rest her tummy down on your legs while you sit on the sofa and listen to music together. And see if a hotwater bottle wrapped in a thick soft towel gives her some comfort.
Now that the medical scare is passed, you may definitely read up on infant massage at www.iaim.net. My best advice is learn from an experienced infant massage parent educator. I've taught a combination of tummy trouble strokes called the gas/colic relief routine and for many years moms tell me gratefully "We got results!"..."relieved of the painful gas." If you're in Orlando or Tampa, I'll be glad to work with you. If you live elsewhere I can refer you to the nearest certified infant massage parent educator. See my business listing Helen's Infant Massage Instruction or call ###-###-####. Best to you, Helen
