Baby Crying for Dad at 4Am Feeding

My husband has been feeding our baby now 5weeks old in the middle of the night for me. Baby Paul seems to refuse to sleep for my husband after his 4am feeding and just cries. He has tried holding him (though he says Paul cant seem to get comfy with him), putting him in the swing, and ends up letting him cry it out (which usually takes 20 mins). My husband says that sometimes Paul is acting hungry, but just ate 6oz.
Paul has never givin we a problem when I have fed him at that time. Has anyone had a baby this young that eats so much at this age and goes 4 hours? He was 8lbs and 15oz at birth and is on soy formula. Could he be hungrier because he is going longer? Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
My infant son was alot like that. I would guess Paul is not completely full. I pump breastmilk and feed from a bottle, and at 5 weeks, my son ate 6oz at a time every 3-4 hours. I didn't make enough milk, so I mixed it with formula. An extra ounce or two at that 4am feeding may make a world of difference. I did a 1am and 4am feeding for weeks!!! Your little guy was big at birth and I personally don't think its unusual to feed 6 or 8 oz of milk at 5 weeks. My pediatrician has always told me to feed them as much as they want. If they are spitting up alot, they are getting too much at one time. If your son holds down is feedings, he just isn't getting satisfied with the amount he is given! Good luck!

He could definately be hungry! My son ate 10 oz every 2 hours forever! Everyone barked about how I was over-feeding him, but he was hungry! Now, he is 3 and wears a small in boys. I would try a little more food and see if that helps. Good Luck!

I would have to say that your son is probably still hungry, babies will push away or refuse food if they are not hungry!! I would increase the amount you feed him at that feeding. He could also be going through a growth spurt and will want more food for a while and may go back down to the 6oz (hopefully soon he won't be waking up for those middle of the night feedings!!!! Ok if your lucky he will!!!)

Good luck

I'd bet that Paul is going through a growth spurt - babies go through a growth spurt at 6 weeks. I didn't know this with our first, and ended up calling the pediatrician's office bawling because everything I tried (changing the diaper, changing clothes, etc.) wasn't working. They said "Give her a bottle!" I did, and she inhaled it.

Let him eat until he's full, and things will go much better!

If he's still acting hungery I would feed him more. It could be what he needs. My son ate more than I thought was normal and was increasing all the time, but he was'nt over weight and isn't by any means now and still eats a ton! Let the baby decide how much he wants to eat. :)
