Hello everyone, I have a little boy who will be 2 months on Christmas and my question is he sleeps about 8 to 9 hours through the night usually but only if he is in his carseat..is this a bad thing? Am I hurting him? I just seems like he is comforted by feeling more secure. I have tried swaddling him and putting him in his bed for naps and he will just cry. He will fall asleep other places but wake up within 30 mins or less. How long can we keep letting him sleep in his carseat?

What can I do next?

Hi J., I am a mother of six, and I have grandchildren. It may seem easier to let your baby sleep in his carseat, and he may sleep better, but it is a hazzard. It has been proven that babies can move and get tangled in the straps, or if they are strapped in, they have pressure on their little chests. In a class I took on "safe sleep" it talked a lot about Sudden Infant Death syndrome. and they talked about the dangers of babies actually dying in their car seats, or carriers. Sudden infant death syndrome is a threat until your baby reaches one year old. but the risk is higher before six months old. We do not know the exact causes of Sids, but we can eliminate the risk factors. I really do not want to scare you, but it is in fact a fear of today. I would try to let your baby lie in his bed more often during the day. and spend less and less time in his seat. and try propping him up (by propping up the whole matress, not by putting blankets in the crib.) try putting him in his bed when he is so so tired, but still awake. let me know if you have any luck. here anyone can read up on SIDS http://www.nichd.nih.gov/SIDS

My lil boy did the same thing when he was born and he'll be 5 months the 20th evweryone says don't let him cause he'll never get used to sleeping in a crib and well it is true cause my lil boy sometimes still does sleep in his carseat and will not allow me to put him in a crib or a pack and play so I usually am the one to stay up until he is in a deep sleep I lay him in his carseat he stays asleep for a long period of time. I was told about a co-sleep its like a bassinett by the bedside where he can sleep in his own bed and you can have him by the bed with your arm resting nest to him so he is more comforted knowing someone is there and he's not alone.Just some suggestions

Hey J.,
You're not hurting him to let him sleep in his car seat. As long as he and you are getting sleep then let him sleep wherever he is comfortable. My son (Zachary) slept in his baby papasan seat for his first 4 months then all of a sudden decided he'd out grown it and wanted to be in his bed. We started him there after he screamed when put in his crib also per our peds request. He told me to let him sleep wherever he would so that we would both get sleep and be happier. He is now 8 months old and sleeping all night in his crib. He'll let you know when he wants a change until then keep doing what your doing as long as it works!

I really hope you are buckling him up. There was a child who suffacated in a car seat because he wasn't strapped in, he got wedged were he couldn't breathe. Be careful. I honestly believe I would let him cry. Later than sooner he will give up and eventually fall asleep in his crib, or you could always try a bassinet, my girls LOVED them because they are so much smaller and more comforting to sleep in, plus it was awsome for me because at nap times I would roll them into whatever room I was in and rock them to sleep in it. Good luck with the sleeping, if you keep up the car seat make sure you buckle him in.
