Baby Can't Sleep Due to Spit Up

My ten week old can't stay asleep because she constantly wakes herself up with a belly ache and spitting up. And its not just a little spit up its a water fall and usually more than one time. She also has gas issues and is on Enfamil Gentleease to help her get it all out. Now we're having a hard time getting her to sleep because of the bad habits being made when she has to be picked up to spit up constantly, she can't sleep flat on her side or her back. But i know how dangerous it is to place her face down. She is currently sleeping propped up in a boppy or on pillows in our bed. Besides our personal life, its not safe. Im so tired and i seem to be spending the most of my time trying to help her back to sleep. And it seems like she doesn't EVER sleep. What has worked for everyone else???

What can I do next?

my two cents, my son did the same thing we couldn't leave the house without every hand towel and cloth diaper going with us because he spit up projectile. in stead of putting him on all the drugs the dr wanted us to use I changed formulas to a soy base and he didn't have the problem anymore he was intolerant to the milk base in the emfamil and other milk base formulas til he was about 6 or 7 months. worth a shot before you start her having to use any drug to correct it, see if it is the formula first. as far as colic that goes away in about 3months, my kiddo is 15yrs old now and made it thru with out all the drugs the dr wanted to use on him and he is fine.

Ask your pediatrician about reflux. This sounds like a typical case of it. You should notice changes for the better in your little darling 3 or 4 days after you start the medicine. I know several people with reflux babies who let their babies sleep in a bouncy seat in the crib. (since the baby needs to be upright) As far as formula, you might check with your pediatrician for samples of lactose-free or soy formula if you haven't already tried those.

My daughter is now 6 months old and still suffers from refux. She has been sleeping in her car seat since she was about 8 weeks old, before that in her swing at an upright position. They both seem to work well for her although not ideal. we are going to try the wedge pillow next... crossing fingers that it helps! Once she started eating baby food, we gave many small meals and less bottle, that also seemed to help a little. Zantac didnt work, but prilosec has helped a little. Everything helps just a little, but we havent found anything to "cure " her. Good luck!

I would say it sounds like reflux too. My son had this. He was on Prevacid until 9 months and then was weaned off it over a one month period. He still spat up until he was about 2 years old, but it was not a daily occurance anymore. Reflux HAS to be treated for 2 reasons. 1. It will burn and damage the esophagus (sp?) and cause more problems later. 2. Left untreated it is not uncommon for a child to have food issues. They associate the pain from the reflux with food and don't want the food for fear of the pain. This is one of the problems my son has. You do not want to deal with this-believe me!

I have not heard of Gentleease. Must be new since my son was a baby. We used Enfamil Nutramigen and the pediatrician told us to add 1 tsp of cereal per ounce of formula. It didn't stop the spit up, but there was an improvement. As far as sleeping, I got a wedge from Babies R Us to put under the sheet. Again, it didn't solve things completely, but it was better. The gas part she will grow out of in a few weeks. It usually improves by 12-16 weeks so you don't have too far to go with that-hopefully. Don't worry too much about forming bad sleep habits if you have to rock her. I spent the first year rocking my little boy. He is now 3 years old and has no problem going off to sleep on his own and sleeps about 12 hours a night. I considered him an awful sleeper (day and night) for the first year and then things suddenly turned around.

Good luck.

Sounds like reflux to me. My son had it, and he was on Zantac for a long time when he was an infant. Here is something that you could maybe help with this during sleeping:

It does sound like reflex. I'd first encourage you to talk to your pedi about what you can do for her and possibly switching formulas.

Also all three of my children slept in the infant car seat on the floor by my side of the bed. This was while they were newborns. They all seemed to like it better This props them up. We could also carry them around the house (just make sure they are buckled in and NEVER leave them on a high place....).

I hope you get and your baby get some relief!

***You are right that it is really dangerous to have the baby sleeping near pillows right now.

It definitely sounds like acid reflux my son was diagnosed with it at 7 wks and had colic as well. The Dr perscribed Zantac which helped with the pain/burning. I gave him Gentle Ease for the colic and gas and used Dr Brown's bottles which helped as well as gas drops. I have a friend that has triplets which had the same problem and she used Gripe water which helped A LOT. I ended up changing my son's formula to Enfamil soy which helped tremendously. He finally outgrew his acid reflux at 13 months but still gags and vomits(projectile) from time to time. I put my son in his bouncy and that helped as well.

Good Luck!
