Baby Brown Rice Cereal Question and Feeding Question

Recently I purchased the Beechnut Brown Rice Cereal because my little one has been having a hard time pooping with the regular cereal, has anyone used this type of cereal with their little ones, any feed back? I know when I eat brown rice, due to the high fiber content, I am going to the bathroom a lot more, is this the same with this cereal? I don't want it to make him go to the bathroom to much to where it is uncomfortable either.

What can I do next?

Rice doesn't help! But...prunes with apples or plain old prunes (stage 1 or 2) work wonders for my little boy.

Hey there,

Haven't tried the brown rice yet but my 6 month old loved the barley but it made him poop 4-5x's a day so we had to take it out of his diet and will slowly integrate it back in. Maybe try the barley once or twice and see if that helps. (We gave it to him 2x's a day for 4 days) so just don't go to that extreme.

Switch to oatmeal. Rice can be very constipating...especially when mixed with iron enriched formula.

Also, we tried pears and this helped.

There is nothing like trial and error. But remember that if it makes you go more so will your child. I'm a big fan of the Gerber mixed grain. We switched our daughter over to that and everything seemed to work well... but not too much if you know what I mean. I'd also suggest probiotics like the granules you can put in drinks or the kind you find in yogurt. Yo baby has a great yogurt that has cereal in it already. The probiotics help add natural bacteria to the digestive tract that can help keep all the problems at bay. Its great for adults too. Diets high in fiber are healthy but I wouldn't recommend one unless you're adding a yogurt a day also. And the kids seem to LOVE the yogurt! That's my daughters normal breakfast.

I mixed the brown rice with the regular oatmeal and regular rice to give him a mix of flavors. He tolerated it just fine. My son had problems with constipation as well.

I agree with the suggestion for prune juice (you can dilute it with water). I have a 15 month old for whom constipation is a constant issue. In December, we started giving him high fiber foods, thinking that would help, but it was the wrong way to go. My poor boy had the hardest stools and going was agony for him! It would be days before he would finally go and the stool was as hard as a rock! An aunt who is also a pediatric dietician said that adding too much fiber to a baby's diet is unhealthy. We are now giving him stool softeners twice a day, limiting his milk to less than 24 ozs a day, and giving him prune juice as much as we can in an effort to regulate him.

I know that this ours is a different situation from your 6 month old, but I wanted to share the warning about too much fiber.

good luck! K.

Hi L.,
You may want to check with his pediatrician on that. I would think that it depends on where your baby is along the solids road. In other words, now that he has started with the single-grain, easy-to-digest cereals, such as rice, is he ready for the higher fiber baby cereals, such as oatmeal and barley (this is what I transitioned my baby to next, after the rice cereal, which really helped him to have his BMs)?

I definitely know that more complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice, are harder to digest. But, if his doctor says that he's ready for that next step, then you can know for sure that it shouldn't cause him any discomfort.

I hope this helps!

I am not sure about the brown rice, I would like to try it. However, try the gerber apple-prune juice to "soften things up". I had success with that and it wasn't overboard, if you know what I mean.

I used the brown rice cereal with my little one and it helped a little with my sons constipation from cereal. It helped even more when I started added pureed prunes, or prune juice to the cereal. My doctor OK'ed the prunes because he was old enough for fruit and juice.

If your baby is constipated, try giving him 1 oz of water mixed with DARK corn syrup. It will clear him up in no time! This was recommended to me by my son's pediatrician. It works wonderfully. Just give him the mixture a couple of times a day until the issue is cleared up. Make sure you use dark corn syrup and not the light. My pediatrician also said to give my son any fruit that starts with "p". Prunes, pears, and peaches all work well.

My daughter had so many constipation problems from all cereals that our pediatrician said it was okay to not give her cereal at all. I just wanted to throw that out there as an option if you continue to have problems. As long as they are getting lots of fruits and vegetables they don't really have to have the cereal. Now she's two and has no problems, but I try to give her fruit at every meal.
