Baby and Anesthesia While Sealant Put on Teeth - Scared

Hi Mamas - I have gotten on this site daily for a while now - and have to say it is incredible how wonderful everyone is! Whoever came up with this site is a genious : )
Okay - my question is this - my 18 month old was born with no enamel on her teeth. She already has damage on her two front teeth and all of her teeth are somewhat soft feeling and have no shine at all. She has to be put under anesthesia for the repair and sealant to be done. This completely freaks me out - and I need to hear from some Mamas that have been through this. My Dr is Dr Lloyd in Arlington and his reviews on here are INCREDIBLE. Also the anesthesiologist called me and spent probably 20minutes on the phone with me just telling me everything and answering all my questions. That was very nice as some Doctors seem too much like they are in a hurry to be patient for the nervous Mom. However my concern besides the anesthesia of course, is that it is being done at USMD in Arlington - and I guess I would prefer Cooks if I had a choice? Does that seem silly? I called another Dentist who said they also use a Surgery Center and only use Cooks if the baby has a medical condition that warrants it. So my question is - has anyone been through this and if so can you tell me how the process went for your child? And is it silly of me to prefer Cooks? And has anyone done this and NOT had to go under General Anesthesia? The Anesthesiologist explained that the sealant getting into the lungs is the big concern so that is why they do General Anesthesia. I am still scared - please Moms, help calm this Nervous Moms heart. : ) Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Hi Guys!! So I wanted to thank you all for your wonderful words of encouragement!!!! My sweet AnnElise had her procedure today and it couldnt have gone better. The Staff at USMD was INCREDIBLE!!!! From the receptionist to the Nurse to the Anesthesiologist, whom is definitely a gift from God, and of course Dr Lloyd - our Pedi Dentist is amazing. They fixed her right up - understood my concerns going in and took all the time I needed to go over questions I had. She got a kiddie cocktail before going back so she was happy and not stressed when being taken back. Dr Lloyd came in when finished and talked to us about a tooth he repaired and the bond they put on to protect her teeth - and was just very thorough and kind. He knew we were apprehensive and took every oppurtunity to reassure us. I would recommend him to anyone that uses Pediatric Dentists. His office staff is remarkable as well. When I was first told that my baby would need a procedure that requires anesthesia, his Office Manager Cindy was very patient with my many questions and a phone calls that first day or two as I adjusted to the idea that my baby was going to have to go under general anesthesia. I have seen many many good reviews on here about Dr Lloyd and I have to agree 100%!
Thanks again Mamas!!

1st off... CONGRATS on being a cancer survivor! I am one too (almost 5 years)and have a 2 year old ! Truly a miracle I know! My 2 year old was put under anethesia when she had tubes put in when she was just 14 months old. She did very well. When she came out of the surgery and was waking up, she was a bit scared and did seem disoriented. Just remember not to get frustrated at all of the screaming and wiggling. Just be calm and cuddle her. It will pass soon. I would bring a favorite toy or something that will help calm her. At first she will be really confused, just be patient and she will calm down and then spend the rest of the day resting. I know you are scared! I was too. I think that if you trust your doctor and the anethesiologist then you should not worry about it not being at cooks ~ Lots of great doctors work at cooks, but they also work outside of cooks too! Everything will be alright, just breath and remember you are doing this for her own good. It will be over before you know it!

No advice, but I'll pray for your baby! I live right by Dr. Lloyd's office, and have heard VERY good things about him.

I am not sure if this will help you, my son had tubes put in at a surgery center in Jan. I was the same way as you I wanted them to do it at Cooks, but not an option. I was so scared of putting him under I almost didn't do the surgery (he was only 10 months old). He was getting so many ear infections I had to do it. I loved the surgery center they were awesome. We went in early morning they do little ones first because they cannot eat before the sugery. They let us take him back to the prep room. You sit in rocking chairs and they will come in and gave him a nose spray anesthesia and in just a few seconds he was out. They take them back to the surgery and when it is time for recovery they bring you back give him to you and he wakes up in your arms. It makes it a little easier on them to see you first when they wake up. I don't think he even knew what happened. The staff was fabulous and I would recommend them to anyone. The only problem we had is that he did vomit after drinking juice (he was hungry and drank to much), but before he was doing fine (even walking around). He also had an allergic reaction to the medicine so he did get a rash it never bothered him, but it did take 4 months to go away. Best of luck!

I wouldnt worry! My son who is 16 months old has had anesthesia MANY times! The first time was when he was about 3 months old. He has had 2 MRI's both requiring anesthesia, 4 EGDS - all requiring anesthesia, and 3 surgeries. We have another one coming up on the 13th. We had problems about 3 times but he has a syndrome that is known for breathing problems. All but one time was at Cooks, his last surgery was at Childrens in Dallas. Cooks has always been great to us! With my son I refuse to do anything outside of a Children's hospital - they just have much more experience. My daughter is 2 1/2 and is a "typical child". With her I wouldn't have a problem going to a normal hospital.

Good luck with everything, she will do just fine! She may wake up a little grumpy but that will pass quickly!

I know how you feel about Cook's, however, my youngest had surgery at Cook's and my oldest son had surgery at USMD in Fort Worth and I have to tell you that my experience at USMD was by FAR much better than at Cook's. At Cook's we were in a dirty HUGE waiting room with a TON of other people waiting. The doctor came out to talk us in front of everyone - there was no privacy. At USMD, we were sent to a very calm and quiet waiting room and then were sent into a very nice private room where we spoke with our doctor. Good luck and I will pray for your family!

HI,

I have a son who was born with soft enamel on his teeth and had to deal with a similar situation when he was just shy of 2. I was extremely nervous and didn't know what to expect. Our dentist is in Arlington, but works through Cook's. We couldn't have had a better experience! My favorite part was when I walked in the recovery room to see my son with a rainbow Popsicle. They also brought him to the car in a red wagon! I definetly would recommend Cook's to you! I don't think it is strange at all! Now he is a happy 4 year old boy who loves to go to the dentist. I wish all the luck in the world to you and your family. If you need our dentist's name please feel free to contact me.
