My son is 8 months old its been about 10 days where I have noticed a differance in his bowel movements. They have become extremely solid.I thought it was normal until a couple days ago when day care approached me.I have tried to keep binding foods out of his diet. I give him a little juice and water in a sippy cup ( I think he spills more than he gets) lots of green veggies. No rice cereal, no bananas, as a last ditch effort we introduced prunes for supper yesterday. Had a bowel movement today still very solid. I do have a appointment tomorow for shots so will ask the Dr while Im there but just looking for ideas of foods for 8 month old that are softening. His bowels do move regularly.....Sorry awkward question ...but will be grateful for any suggestions...Thanks!

What can I do next?

I found this list of foods that will cause/aggravate diarrhea and when my son was too solid, I tried to feed more from it. When he was too loose, I avoided them. For a quick easy way to remember it, the foods that start with P are the foods that make you poop- peaches, pears, prunes, plums, peas. Prunes always worked the best, don't overfeed those, or it can be a disaster :). I keep my son regular by alternating the Poop foods with the non-poop foods. If he eats an apple he eats some peaches too. If he has too many pears, he get a banana. The whole website is very helpful for feeding questions, by the way.

Anything with a lot of fiber is generally the rule to keep things.....moving. There could possibly be a thousand reasons why his stools have firmed-up.

Pears are very high fiber as are most fruits/vegetables, but depending on the number of teeth and his ability to chew, you may or may not be comfortable feeding a lot of them. You could always overcook foods such as carrots so they're more palatable and easier to eat.

Juices are good, but only ones that are 100% juice because they have the most fiber. Apple cider is likely best because it has so much of the pulp in it .

Solid stools vs. constipation may or may not warrant medications - for now, I'm guessing the pediatrician will recommend dietary, high-fiber foods to help keep things moving along with lots of liquids.

More juice and water!!! Make sure he is getting plenty of both.......that will help a lot. And yes, talk to your doctor about it.
Good luck and take care.

Mention to your doctor that you are not giving your baby rice cereal. I think it's extremely important that babies get this. Especially the iron-fortified type. It's their 'meat' replacement, and they need it for iron. Fluids help with bowel movement. It make take a day or two for the prunes to start working also.

I heard for babies it is more about water than fiber...

Hi,
I noticed the same thing with my 8 month old son - I upped his water intake, offered sips of water between meals to loosen thiings up. If he was really straining, I gave him some prunes to help things along.

I didn't discontiniue the rice cereal, just mixed it with more fruit, particulalry pears.

Baby is now 11 months old, and is on mostly table food - has started eating a tremendous amount! His poops are more normal and less solid and he has less difficulty passing them. I think it just took his system a while to get used to processing the solid food. Talk to your Dr and see what they say, and in the meantime, increase the amount of water you offer and see how he does with prunes!

p.s. - offer water at every meal - it will help! If he isn't getting enough water due to spills, try another brand of sippy cup!
Good Luck!

Please be careful with the apple cider suggestion that someone made as some apple ciders are not pasturized. But she is right apple cider does have the most fiber just make sure that it is pasturized.
