Both my kids could use a straw by 4-5 months. I believe this is because they are breastfed. From what I've read the sucking skill they use to breastfeed is a lot like the sucking skill a person needs to use a straw so breastfed babies will often be able to use a straw sooner then a sippy because it's just a lot more of familiar sensation for them.

As soon as they are able to get it down without tipping the cup! ;) My daughter started using straw cups I think at about 1 (when we stopped the bottle, she was over it). She made a few messes not knowing the difference between ones you tip and ones you sip, but she got it down! It's up to you Momma, whenever you think she is ready. Start with soft straws would be my only advice though. plastic ones end up in the nose or eyes occasionally in the beginning and could hurt.

yep- usually around age 1 they are ready- but all kids are different. Coming from a speech pathologist opinion: straw cups can be a great alternative for sippy cups. Better for their oral motor skills and articulation development ;-)

Just be careful what you let them suck up. I hope it isnt sugary sodas. I would put the straw in milk and then cap the top with my finger and put the other end in my babies mouth, they suck, you let your finger off the top and thats how they learn to use the straw :)

My lil one was only 4 months old she never took a bottle except for 2 times when I left her with dad that was it she was exclusively breastfeed till she was 15 months old but at age 4 months I gave her sips of water then diluted juices with her meals at age 5-6 months, now after 6 months she adjusted to sippy cups but didn't like them much.

My 9 month DD has been using one since she was 4 months old... she even uses the no-spill type (it has to be bitten to allow the liquid through)
