Axis in Eyeglasses

I got a prescription for glasses for my daughter and have heard great things about some of the online places you can order glasses. When I got ready to order them, I couldn't read one of the numbers listed on her prescription for the axis. So I called the eye doctor and asked about it. It looks like it says either 175 or 75, but the way she wrote the 7 it was hard to tell. When I talked to them on the phone to get the correct number, they said it should be 170. Now I'm concerned and don't want to order the wrong thing, but it's also more than two hours to the clinic (one way). How much difference does that number make? Will it make a huge difference if the number was supposed to 175 and I order them according to what they told me on the phone (170)?

What can I do next?

they should have written down the correct number at the dr. office. ask them to look it up so you are sure.

Eyes are WAY too important NOT to get the RIGHT ones!! I just got a new pair of glasses about two weeks ago and they made a WORLD of difference! The perscription barely changed, but I can see SOOO much clearer now!

By the way: I was told to NEVER wipe glasses with anything made of wood or they will scratch. I looked at the lady funny because I was thinking I would never rub my glasses on tree bark - duh! But she clarified: NO tissues, toilet paper, napkins, etc. Always use the dry cloth that comes with the glasses, or get the alcohol wipes made specifically for glasses. Or just run them under HOT water and shake off the excess (I have been doing this lately with good results).

Yes it does make a difference! I do not advise you to get the glasses made from an online service. Believe me....I work in optical and there are plenty of times people have bought them online and they are made wrong. The axis is the way your daughters eye turns so she can see correctly. It has part to do with the cylinder correction ( the 2nd number on your prescription). If you still would like to do it online I would recommend finding somewhere where you can recieve a fax and have them fax you the correct prescription. You should have the correct prescription anyways. Good luck!

From some quick research, the axis can vary from 0 to 180 degrees. That would mean that a difference of 5 degrees would not be large, but I would want to be accurate as possible for the comfort of your daughter.

I would think they would have entered the results of your daughter's exam into some type of computer system. If so, they aren't trying to decipher handwriting, but reading from a screen, so they should be giving you accurate numbers. But if you still aren't sure, you can always call and ask again.

Is it the same for both eyes? I would call and double check with them. Also how old is your daughter? You might want to consider getting her a pair from walmart it's a little more then the cheap online places. They are $40 and that includes insurance for any reason your dog could eat them and they will fix them no cost. Well worth it if you ask me.
