Avoid Infection

Hi,

My one year old got his finger stuck in a cabinet door yesterday and there is a little cut on his finger. I tried to put neosporin and a bandaid on it, but he pulled the bandaid right off. Now it looks red and irritated and I don't want it to get infected. Any suggestions on what I can do to keep it clean and put antibiotic ointment on it to avoid problems.

What can I do next?

My youngest one used to get infected cuticles quite a bit as a baby. The pediatrician told me to soak the hand in hot (not too hot) water with epsom salt. This always worked like a miracle and drew out the infection.

Hi N.

My 3 year old still hates band aids and my strategy has been frequent washing for cuts and scrapes. I don't like to put neosporin on his hands because they go into his mouth. Little ones love to play in the water so keeping it clean shoudn't be too much of a struggle.

Good Luck

Hi N.,
I would just wash his hands offten and put ointment on after every wash. I think he will be fine but if it gets worse call his doctor. If you still feel you should do more call his doctor today and ask them what they feel you should do.
I hope today goes better than yesterday,

Keep it clean with soap and water and when he naps or goes to sleep at night, put the neosporin on then and cover it if you can.

Would fun kiddie bandaids interest him?

Hi N.,

I don't know how well this might work for you, but I have this stuff called "Skin Shield." It is a liquid bandage with a little brush that you just brush on the cut and let it dry. Band Aid might make their own version of this, I don't know. I used it while I was in culinary school b/c we were always getting knicked and cut in inconvenient places lol. I just thought it might be worth a try since your little one doesn't want to wear the band aid. I hope this helps...

do not put antibiotic on it, wash his hands often, pour water peroxide (H2O2) several times a day over it, for the night and nap you can put Aquaphor Baby on it, that's it, it will be fine
good luck

Hiya N......
And it just keeps on getting more fun huh?! What they get into!! I would suggest when he is just about asleep for his nap or time for bed... put the neosporin/bacitracin on the bandaid and quickly get it on the finger as sly as you can! Hope that works for ya and good luck!

Hi N.,

As long as you help him wash his hands and keep it clean, it does not need to be kept under a bandaid. Reddness does not automatically mean infection. Think about your scratches and cuts, the redness is there because of tissue damage, the repair process begins immediately after an injury. When it is bumped, it is going to look irritated and you have alot of cells in there working to get it healed up!

Hand washing is the most important thing you can do to help prevent any type of infection. Running water and soap takes the bugs away!

Have a Great Day!

Wash hands frequently and clean with peroxide a couple times a day. That should be sufficient.
