What books do your children love to read? My boys, preschool/grade 1 love the Mo Willems series, I love them too. They will just sit and read them with out me even saying, "why don't you read a book?". It's great, I love how they read them with such expression and laugh. Is there an author your child loves to read?
I have been subbing for 14 years and I think some of the most favorite books that children request for me to read are the Magic Treehouse series. We read a lot of these in 1st grade.

anything that is not a graphic novel. I know I know anything that gets them to read but if they get started on those it is hard to get them back into books that are not all pictures. So hold off on those as long as possible.
Dr Seuss was our go to author - we read them ALL!
At that age the Frog and Toad and Little Bear series of books were favorites. So was Clifford, Curious George, Dr. Suess and the Berenstain (sp?) Bears. Mo Willems is GREAT, love those, wish they had been around twenty years ago!
My first grader really loves Junie B Jones right now.
Jan Thomas books are great for that age.

In grade one both of my boys were much more interested in non-fiction, such as Discovery Kids or Eyewitness Kids books.

Ditto to Magic Tree House, Curious George, Dr. Seuss, maybe Junie B. Jones (though I didn't like the character much).
I would add the Berenstain Bear books--there are tons of them and they contain good lessons without being preachy because they have lots of funny incidents. The Magic School Bus books might work too. Beverly Cleary writes great books, and even though many of them focus on a central female character (Ramona), there are some with boys at the center (Henry and Ribsy). These might be read-aloud books, however, based on the 1st grader's reading comfort.
Reading to kids is still important too, and you might want to try the C.S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia series on your bunch. My daughter was reading them herself by 1st grade, however I think most kids probably would be more ready for them by 2nd or 3rd grade, so you could read those to them. I had a blast reading The Phantom Tollbooth (by Norton Juster) to my kids! They read it in school in a later grade (same with Beverly Cleary), but that doesn't matter.

I have a first grade and a preschool boy, too :) The first grader loves to read Roald Dahl, L Frank Baum, CS Lewis, Cornelia Funke, Cressida Cowell. But if you are looking for books for him to read to your little one- Skippy John Jones is so fun! My kids' all time favorite picture book is probably the "Monster at the End of This Book" with Grover :)
