Attention Gardeners

I live in an apartment with a good sized balcony. I am thrilled to have the time now to plant some things, but I am new to San Antonio and not sure what to plant and what might grow. Our balcony is in shade most of the day with some evening sun. I would love to plant some kind of food since I have a soon-to-be 4 year old that is SO excited about gardening. Flowers would be nice also. I have all kinds of containers, but need some ideas on plants. TIA.

What can I do next?

I am not a great gardener, but I love to cook with fresh herbs. I have been able to keep some herbs (basil, thyme and rosemary) alive in containers. I have also had success with tomatoes in containers. Hybiscus and Bouganvilla (sp?) also do really well here with little effort. Good luck and have fun!

Hi,
I've been a Master Gardner for 30yrs and am new to Texas as well as the south in general. I have a couple of suggestions, just about any Herb will grow well and tolerate the late afternoon/evening sun as the days get longer and they tolerate in fact don't mind drying out, if you forget to water them for a couple of days. W/ the 4yr old in mind, try to find some bulbs and or sweet potatoe and plant them in clear glass jar or vase, that way your little one will be able to watch the roots grow (they have larger roots to see)and get to enjoy the flower. You could also check out your county Extension Service website or call them. They helped me when I got here and saved me from making some big mistakes.

We just got down here to San Antonio as well, but I am noticing that my neighbors in this appartment building are growing Tomatoes, Basil and rosemary on their porches. I have also seen some lettuce and what I assume is onions but may be chives.
A great place to ask is Lowes in the seed section. I love to buy those little green houses and some seeds and start my plants that way. Your 4 year old may really like that too. I'm kind of silly, but I name each plant and put it's name on a popsicle stick and keep a little record of how they grow. Bob the tomato is always nice if he watches veggietales. I always had a charlie just because I like that name. My landlord said they grow pansies down here in the winter, but they don't do well in the summer.
