with the economy being in the toilet, and money being tight bec of increase in gas and grocerys, was wondering if anyone has tried the at home highligt kits...have never done it before myself and use to get it done at the salon a lot b4 the economy tanked. I want them again bec am feeling drab, ut don'thave really the cash to do it at a solon, bec all my money goes to the kids now, and my husband and I both think that dropping $150 for that is crazy now. Anyone ever do it at home, and what were the results...thank you all so much in advance!

What can I do next?

I have never had any luck with the highlight kits, it's just hard to get all the areas evenly. What I usually do when I want highlights is to dye my base color myself at home, that's easy...find the color you want, mix it, apply, comb through, wait 25 minutes & rinse then condition...then go spend just $40 for the highlights. I could never spend $150! LOL
good luck!

Talk to a professional about what type of hightlights go with your hair color. Too many ppl choose a light color but it can make it incorrect if you have too much ash or green in your hair already.

i.e. I have to buy the over the counter kind that say "ash" in the title. If not I can turn myself purple or green...

But yes they can work.

Don't do it. I used to be a licensed hairstylist and I can't even do my own highlights. You just can't see the back of your head and it's really hard to get the color even. I would try going to a beauty school and ask for a senior student to do your highlights. Beauty schools are usually very inexpensive.

What color is your hair now? About 10 to 12 years ago I used to hi lite my hair all the time. I have dark blonde hair and it was really short at the time. I used a kit that was like $12 and contained a cap to pull pieces of hair through and bleach. I thought it worked great! I even did friends' hair for them too. But now with my long hair it would be too hard to do my own cuz I can't pull it through a cap.

Hope your hair turns out great! Oh but whatever you do don't die over it if you don't like it. You could give the hi lites a green hue and dry out your hair. You'll have to put a toner on it, and can find that at a beuaty supplies store (like Sallys Beauty Supply).

Turned my dark brown hair ORANGE! I was going for a box color that had dark brown hair and soft brown highlights and I got ORANGE ... cost more to fix than it would have to just get it done to begin with. I had to tint it for 3 weeks then dye it and keep tinting it to keep it from going back to orange for about 6 months until it finally took the third round of dye. I strongly reccomend holding off or spending 10 bucks at sally's and getting some clip in peek a boo extensions for funzies!

I always hear bad things about home highlight kits. All over color is easy but highlighting is not as easy. I did it to myself years ago and it came out fine but I only did a few highlights in the front just to add a little something. I don't think I could have done my whole head.

If price is the issue, and you don't trust yourself to do a good job you can always check a Bo Rics or Fantastic Sams or something of the like. Their prices are very low. Most people would gasp at what I just typed stating that it's a class B salon and the stylists must not be good.

I worked at a class A salon as a receptionist for a number of years and walked out of there with plenty of bad haircuts and questionable dye jobs.

It all depends on the stylist, whether they do it the basement or the fanciest salon in the world.

I am a hairstylist in the Flint area and I can tell you people spend more money on color correction after a home job then they would have just coming into the salon in the first place. My first advice would be to shop around for any deals a salon or stylist would be offering. We run specials all the time. Especially a new stylist trying to build a clientele. Second, Sometime a stylist will be willing to offer a deal just to you if maybe she/he is having a slow day. Try calling on a Monday or Tuesday when salons are a little slow. Third, try getting only a few highlights just on the top layer of your hair and around your face. This is the place where highlights will mostly show anyway so why waste extra money on the underneath? I always offer discounts on only putting a few in. And fourth, try a salon outside of TC. Big cities can charge more because they have more people willing to pay the High dollar. The salon I work in is actually a few miles North of Flint so we charge a lot less. Depending on hair length a full head of Highlights starts at around $70.00 and that includes a cut. Hope I helped.

Look for a beauty school in your area. They do most all hair treatments at an extreme discount. And the one who does your hair is someone who is close to graduating and they are supervised by a professional.

I spend way too much on my hair, but I did very successfully highlight hair for the daughter of a friend of mine. We chose a box of haircolor/highlights that had a base color close to her shade, and it turned out great. I think it would be extremely difficult to do it yourself, but if you had a friend help you, it could work well as long as you choose the right shade. When we did it, her hair looked beautiful!

*She has thick, long hair, so we bought 2 boxes just in case, and ended up using a box and a half.

I think it depends on your hair color. I have red hair and get terrific results with a home kit, with nice blonde streaks. My favorite kit is the one through Clairol, with a comb you fill with the highlight mixture and drag down the hair. It's really easy. I always ended up with results just like I got for a bundle more at the salon.

I did this years and years ago. Know what? It didn't work well at all. Why? Because if we do it alone, we're not able to effectively pull the hair through the cap on the rear of the head.
So understanding your concern with the economy, I would have your hubby be your help or a friend. If you really don't trust hubby to do it right, have a friend help you who's maybe had it done or helped someone before.
Another alternative is to find a beauty college and have it done there. It's less expensive because the students are learning, but they're supervised.
Good luck! I do like the look, I have to admit. It wasn't highlights when I tried it. It was 'Frosting" or streaking.

Back when I was an un-natural blond (discovered my true brunette self recently), I did the comb-through highlights on top of my blond....no ill effects. I used a hand-held mirror in front of my bathroom mirror to see the back of my head - the same technique I do to cut my own hair.

If you don't think you can get the results you want doing it yourself, ask someone else to do the back.

yes it is too hard for me to do the at home highlights. I did it and looked like a weird leopard. I had to re-dye my whole head. I totally am in the same boat. Money is way too tight to go and do highlights esp when you have to keep touching them up every 6 weeks or they start to look bad. Try one of the highlight/lowlight shades. They're one color hair dye but have shimmer effect. I forget the brand.
