Athlete's Foot During Pregnancy??

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced athlete's foot during pregnancy? I'm 32 weeks pregnant and my foot has been itchy for the last few days. My husband looked at it and he thinks it's athlete's foot. I've never had it before and have no idea how I got it but am now wondering if there are safe medications I can use while pregnant. It's the weekend, so I doubt I'll be able to reach my OB. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had the exact same thing. I didn't use any medication, I just tried to wash my feet and dry them really good. It went away after I gave birth. I would also try to wear socks all the time, I noticed that my feet would itch a lot more if I wore shoes without socks. Hope it helps,

The number one thing you need to be aware of is that over the counter athlete's foot treatments can take up to six weeks to work. Have you looked at the ingredients...yuck! There are great healthy alternatives available out there. I am partnered with a company the specializes in non-toxic, environmentally friendly, more economical products. Send me a note and I will tell you more.

Tea tree oil is very good at killing fungus. It is safe during pregnancy and easy to find (try whole foods). That combined w/ the vinegar should take care of it.

Hi A.! Congrats on the 1st baby on the way. My son is 14 mos & its been quite a ride! :) I would talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using any medicine. Even topical. Just to be on the safe side. You could try the tea tree oil or soak your foot in hot water with Epsom salts. If you're sure its Athlete's Foot, you should make sure you keep your feet dry. It can also "live" in your shoes, so spray down your shoes with some of the Athlete's Foot spray. Maybe wash some flip flops to wear this weekend until you can speak to the doctor or nurse. I had Athlete's Foot a couple of times as a teenager when I played sports, its pretty annoying but it will go away easily with the over the counter stuff once you get cleared to use it. Best of luck & again congrats on the baby!!! You're in the home stretch! Enjoy these last two months of solitude. :)
Sincerely, A.

any topical anti-fungal cream or spray should do the trick! i don't see why it wouldn't be safe to use since it's topical. OR you could first try just washing your feet really well and applying baby powder, and don't wear socks or shoes. you SHOULD spray an anti-fungal product on the soles of your shoes though, b/c if you get rid of the stuff on your feet, then stick your feet back in your shoes, the cycle will repeat! athlete's foot is usually caused by your feet being too moist and dirty. sweaty feet is common during pregnancy, so after the fungus is gone, keep baby powder on your feet, keep them clean, and don't wear shoes when you don't have to!

I was told by the pharmacist that the topical ointments are not absorbed through the skin. You might call the local Walgreens and ask your pharmacist.

Good luck

try an athletes foot anti-fungal cream (ex. lotrimin AF)-- get it at the groccery stor of pharmacy -- probably shouldn't be an issue since you're so late in your pregnancy -- in addition, i was advised to use the same cream on my babies (i have 3 - 2 boys, 1 girl) when they got yeast infections (fungal) in their diaper areas. you should notice an improvement within about 12-24 hours -- also, keep your foot dry --

you may also want to call one of the People's pharmacies -- they are REALLY good at providing remedies that carefully consider your pregnancy

good luck

Try soaking your feet in Apple Cider vinegar. You will need to do this for several days. Also if you have any socks that your wore since your breakout, you can use the vinegar in your rinse cycle in your washer.

This worked with my boys during high school.

OH how annoying.
My OB prescribed Clotrimazole, or ,Monistat vaginal yeast infection cream, Since it is meant for the genital area it is a lot more sensitive, but gets the job done.
It works much faster than the foot creams and since it is not a spray there are no odors to get into your lungs. For your shoes, Wash them in the washer or sink.
Good Luck.

Just an after thought...but I wonder if this is why they came up with the term, "barefoot and pregnant" . HHHMMMM just wondering.

You should definitely check with your doctor to make sure that it is athlete's foot - you don't want to be treating the wrong thing. In the meantime - Tinactin spray (topical) should be fine to help stop the itch and start the healing process. I am pg and had a case of ringworm on my ankle (also a fungal infection), and my doctor said the over-the-counter Tinactin spray is safe to use. Keep in mind that fungal infections can take several weeks to clear up. Be sure to keep your feet as dry as possible to help the healing process. Be sure to talk to your doctor though, even if the Tinactin starts to work for you.

I agree with the pp about apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil. Be careful, I got toenail fungus around 35 weeks when I went to get a pedicure before my delivery. My podiatrist said that I probably had athlete's foot and didn't know it (sometimes no symptoms) and when I got my pedicure the fungus was spread to my toenail. Not fun, especially since I am breastfeeding and I can't take any med's. I have been using tea tree oil and soaking in apple cider vinegar and have seen an improvement. Take good care of your toenails and don't get a pedicure from a nail salon - have your husband/Mom/friend paint your toenails for delivery day!

Go see your doc before you start taking any medicine for it - eczema is also common in pregnancy, and can be on your feet, so I would wait until Monday - sorry about the itchy weekend!

My feet got dry and scaly and itchy with each pregnancy. I personally believe it's due to partial dehydration. You need extra fluids when pregnant, and if you're not getting them, then it affects your body. It could be athlete's foot, though. Try scrubbing and hydration for a while. Then, if you think it's athlete's foot, Avon has a great spray for that.

Wow I thought I was the only who had to deal with this ugly thing. I also got "athletes foot" during pregnancy. My doctor (OB/GYN)said I could only take topical treatments which helped relieve the itching but unfortunately, it spread to my nails. Now that my baby is two months old I am starting to take an oral medication prescribed my regular doctor which does not interfere with my breastfeeding. It was really bad for me because I had a summer pregnancy/delivery so I rarely wore sandals. Anyways, I hope yours heals quicker than mine and doesn't get as bad. Good luck!

I got it too and much earlier during my pregnancy. My OB (a top notch perinatologist) told me that Lotrimin was perfectly safe to use. Hope this helps!

Tea tree oil is a safe anti fungal, anti bacterial you can try....dab it on with a cotton ball and then put on cotton socks. It's good to do this at night too. and make sure your shower floor is clean and disinfected so you don't reinfect yourself. good luck!

Try using Head and Shoulders shampoo. It has an antifungal medicine in it that will take care of the athlete's foot. Good luck!

First -- big congrats on the new arrival!!!

May sound silly, but if you soak your feet in a vinegar/water mix (50/50)it does pull out the itchy feeling. Don't need the mix deep - just enough to soak - do for about 15-20 minutes a couple of times a day.

A. - since you can't call your OB, just ask the pharmacist, they are very knowledgable about that stuff. Sometimes more than the doctor!

Sorry so late but I was just reading back on some of the dates. By now you have probably solved your athletes foot problem... But I just wanted to let you know that keeping a gallon of cheap vinegar in your shower really helps. I use a sponge and just put some on after I am done with my shower for a few moments and then rinse off. It gets rid of athletes foot, ring worm, poison ivy, other skin rashes, and the white fungus that you see commonly on old women's elbows. I don't use it everytime I shower but at least once a week even if I don't have anything going on. It smells a bit and I usually try to breathe outside the shower door while using it, I don't think it is dangerous for your lungs but I don't take any chances. If you have scratched the skin much and have small wounds they will burn a little with the vinegar. It helps keep funguses and junk out of the shower grout. Maybe this will help in the future.
God Bless and Congratulations
D.
