I have a 5 month olf bay girl who has acid reflux and laryngealphagia. She sounds like she has asthma but its laryngealphagia that is making her sound bad. She has been on Prevacid and Zantac to help with the acid reflux and I am having a harder time getting the prvacid in her casue it is grainy.. She has recently got so frustrated with things you have to swaddler her and pat her bum to get her to calm down. She was getting better last month the breathing wasn't as noisy but now it is starting up again she goes back to the ENT this month to get the scope again but I fear surgery might happen.. I am looking for anyone who has any experoence with this. I have navy drs most of the time and I don't think to highly of their pediatrition, but now I am going to providence for this situation. This is just very nerve racking!
I wanted to thank everyone for your advise. She went to the ENT yesterday and unfortunetly she is going to go through a surgical procedure and the 2nd of July at Hasboro and it is suppose to be a simple procedure.. More to come as I know!
BAck from the Hospital
Siobhan came through with flying colors! She is now in the process of proclaiming herself princess of PCIU at Hasbro Childrens Hospital. She decided she didn't like her breathing tube because it was uncomfortable and made her gag....She removed it herself. She was making demands for food. She kept disconnecting herself from all of the monitors demanding everyones time. She finally settled down and dozed off and slept for a couple hours. She has no more noise as she breathes which means she won't be usuing all of her cqaleries to breathe and eat! Hopefully that means she will gain weight easier! Thank you everyone for your support everyone!

Hello S., my name is T.. I have a 5 1/2 month old baby boy who also has acid reflux. My doctor started him out on the liquid Zantac, but he hated the taste of this. Recently, my doctor placed him on Axid (similar to the Zantac). Although it appears that he doesn't LOVE the taste, he still takes the Axid without much issue and does not spit it back out. We're also using an over-the-counter liquid solution called "Gripe Water", which can be bought at Walmart.
Hi S., my daugher also has bad reflux and she has laryngomalacia, (she is 3 1/2 months old) she also has the very noisy breathing (spent almost 3 weeks in childrens nicu) and has had 1 surgery when she was a week old. She does get more noisy at times and her ent doctor told me it was from the reflux, last time we went they upped her protonix and she has been a little more quite lately. Do you have to use the navy doctors? If not I suggest Dr. Vecchiotti or Dr. Amin at Childrens Boston, its a pain to get to but they also see patients in Waltham. hope all goes well, take care!

Hi S., I just joined this group. I wrote that I am pregnant with my 1st child but actually this is my fourth. my other three dont live with me but that is another story. Anyway, my first son Jacob had exactly the same problem. He was in the hospital 7 times the first yr of his life with breathing problems. He always sounded sick and was always happy. I finally took him to a specialist down in Worcester when he was 1yr. old. Come to find out, it wasn't asthma at all but it was a lose windpipe. They said it would just stregthen it time and would not hurt him. He just turned 11yrs. old and is fine. He does have asthma it turned out. But once he started walking and getting bigger that raspyness and rattling in his throat went away,.Just run it by your pediatrition. Cause I put myself through hell and worrying over nothing.What ever you do, dont let people smoke cigerettes around him cause it does make a difference. But when people look at you funny when your in a quiet room. Dont worry about it. They are just ignorant. Hope it turns out ok. sincerely C. N.
I don't have much advice on this situation other than doctor help. You said that you're going to Providence now. I live there and love my son's dr. (who is in Prov.) He also works out of Hasbro and those drs are the best. Many of them have their own offices outside of the hospital and work at hasbro because they love to help children.. My advice to you is this, get your daughter a dr that you like. Navy drs are good and all, but their peds aren't. Their docs are meant for grown-ups and they have peds as secondary. Hope this helps. my daughter had laryngomalasia(?) from about 2 months til she was a year and a half. She had it pretty bad for months and then it seemed much better for awhile. At about a year it seemed to get worse again and i went to my dr. and he said it was normal for it to get worse again before it got better. By 2 it was completely gone and we never had to do anything for it. Hope this helps!

I live in the Blackstone Valley area and have to young boys who were both diagnosed with acid reflux. My oldest had burning of the esophagist ( mind my spelling) and bleeding from the mouth ( both due to the reflux) he was put on zantac and seen at umass memorial hospital in worcester ma. The pedi specailist that he saw up there was Dr Hardy and he was wonderful. Hope this helps and good luck.

I have a 1 year old who I believe went through the same thing...even though her reflux test came back negative, and the ear, nose and throat specialist said there was nothing to be concerned about.
Her breathing was very labored, especially at night while she was on her back. She was breastfed for 2 months...then i switched to Alimentum Similac and her reflux virtually disappeared in about a week, but she immediately slept better from the first bottle. it was incredible...and her labored breathing was gone shortly after that. i would suggest Similac Alimnetum to anyone with a child who has reflux. it is more $$ but sooooo worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!
