Astigmatism in a 2Year Old?

I had to take my daughter in to a pediatric eye specialist to check her eyes because my dear hubby gave her a genetic disposition towards a "lazy eye", his problem wasnt treated early enough to stop it when he was little and it eventually resulted in permanent loss of sight in one of his eyes. Anyways, I took her in yesterday and the specialist said she has a mild astigmatism in BOTH eyes! He said he doesnt want to treat it yet, but eventually she will need treatment..(glasses). He also made an appointment in 2 weeks for a "dilation" test to check her eyelids because one of her eyelids is SLIGHTLY drooped and its only noticeable when she is sleepy and he asked me to take up close pictures of just her eyes and bring them with me to the next check up. Does anyone know about astigmatism in toddlers? What is usual procedure for correction? Has anyone ever had to get these tests on their little ones? Any feedback is helpful, I am worried about her having to wear glasses at the age of 2 or 3. :(

What can I do next?

I am 24 yrs old, my daughter is 25 weeks old. We had to take her to the eye doctor in November, both her father and I wear glasses (contacts now), and my family has an eye that sometimes can make it look crooked. She had started squinting really badly so I was worried. We took her in, they did an eye exam and dialated her eyes and she turned out to be perfectly fine. But, since it is coming from both sides we have to keep her checked reguarly. The other hard part was the dialation, they have to get those drops in, and then she has to wear the grandma glasses, which on a toddler are too adorable. If they find something with your daughter, other than something glasses can help, then get it treated right away. Of course, with your husband, you can see what can happen if not treated. the eye exam and glasses are not the worst thing that can happen. I am sure she will be fine and there isnt anything to worry about.

My daughter is 3 year old now and she wears glasses now(her eyes turn in) she loves them she can see better now and as far as the exams go ahead theres nothing to worry about at all my daughter had had her eyes dilated a few times now and they never bothered her just let her pick out a cute pair of sunglasses to start for her next eye exam so her eyes dont hurt when she goes out side. theres just one thing from experance make sure you have a patient and not to busy eye doctor it help a lot when the take their time with the little ones it makes the world of difference we had one that would let her scream and holler and would want us to hold her down(witch created a fear of eye exams) so now we drive a hour and a half to see a doctor in Nakomis but shes happy now and thats all that matters!! good luck with you daughter hope things go well!!

My daughter was 4 when they told me she had astigmatism in her right eye. With glasses they said it would either stay the same of improve. She has been wearing the glasses and it has slightly improved. I took her to two different drs and they both said the same thing. It is possible she has it, just spend the money and get the most durable glasses you can for her. Good luck!~~kim

I had both my kids tested, because I have astigmatism and lazy eye. Both my kids are A-OK though.

When I was a kid, I wore glasses, obviously. I was nearly legally blind. And I also had my eye patched. As well as eye therapy sessions. All of it worked because my lazy eye straightened out and has never been lazy since. My astigmatism improved tremendously. Today, my vision is about 20/30 to 20/40 in both eyes and I really don't need my glasses to see!

I started therapy and glasses when I was 5. Good luck!
