Assymetrical IUGR

At my doctors appointment yesterday my doctor mentioned that the ultrasound technician had noted something at my 33 week ultrasound about the baby being asymmetrical and she had no idea what they had meant by that so she told me to schedule another ultrasound for Monday. She said that it was probably nothing to worry about because I am a really small person to begin with.

Well, me being the curious person that I am decided to look around on the internet and an asymmetrical IUGR pretty much sums up everything. I am, of course, freaking out.

I called my doctor and she told me that she wants me to keep my ultrasound for Monday but that she wasn't really worried about it because I am so small. That eased my worry a little bit (I've stopped crying), but not a lot (I'm still shaking).

I guess I'm just looking for people that have had IUGR to tell me that it's not as scary as the internet makes it out to be and that my baby will be okay.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My doctor talked to a specialist for me and the specialist recommended that I have a level 2 ultrasound. I had the level 2 ultrasound today and they basically told me that it was a shame the person noted my baby being asymmetrical as he is perfectly fine. He is now about 5 pounds (Which is a big jump considering he was about 3 pounds at the 33 week ultrasound). His head is a little larger than normal and his tummy is a little smaller than normal, but not to the point that they would consider anything to be wrong.

Thank you to every one who has responded. And yes, I have noticed that google seems to give the worst case scenarios at the top of the page.

My grandson had IUGR - but not asymmetrical. Which I take to mean that parts of the baby are growing at different rates.

My GS was born at 34 weeks, and only weighed 3 pounds, 5 oz - and a normal 34 week baby is 4 and a half pounds. He had absolutely ZERO problems, not even with breathing. At 21 months, the only thing he is behind in is talking and his size. He is 21 pounds, so only 5% weight and about 10-15% height. He's a little guy, but perfectly healthy!

I just looked it up and it says that detecting it is important. So if it does turn out to be IUG, you are aware of it and the dr. can get you through it and do what is best for you and the baby.

Also, ultrasounds can be very scary. They detect a lot of stuff that always isn't true or that causes unnecessary alarm. For example, my daughter had Chroid Plexus Cysts in her brain. And the OB/GYNs at my practice all said don't worry - it will work out fine - and they were right, my daughter is perfect. But what a scare it gave us for about 6 weeks.

So my point is, try not to worry too much. Your doctor is telling you that she doesn’t think it should be something to worry about - so try to relax. Easier said than done, I know. But Monday isn't far away. All the best!

I don't know anything about his disorder but the internet can be a place that is not the best for researching possible conditions...it always seems to give worst-case scenarios which leads to unnecessary worrying. I'd stop looking at this online and wait to see what your dr. says. I know it's so easy to go online and there's so much info but sometimes it's not the best thing. I hope everything works out for you and your baby is healthy.:)

If your Dr isn't overly concerned then the issue may be on the "let's just keep an eye on it" . My youngest son was on the small size on the ultrasounds but I delivered a very healthy baby. I would talk to your OB and state your concerns, I'm sure she will reassure you that everything is ok and they are just being cautious. Good Luck and listen to your OB and not jump to conclusions!
