My grandson (diagnosed w/Aspergers) turned 8 in May. He LOVES Chess and I am looking for a Chess Club for kids. Has anyone heard of one in the area? He lives in North Richland Hills. Do you know of other inexpensive programs that we could get him involved in to help with his social skills? We would also like to get him on a soccer team.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the information! I sent most of it to my daughter - we will check into it. I appreciate the responses, and we will probably be in touch with some of you.

Hi there,
i am the mother of a sixteen year old boy who has asperger's. He was diagnosed when he was seven. Thisis a tough row to hoe grandma, at least it was for us, because no one knew much about it, alot didn't know anything at all. Teachers, some doctors too. Hopefully the attention it's starting to get will make your grandson's life easier than my dylan had it.
I don't have answers to the questions you asked, i just wanted you to know that y'all aren''t all alone, and for you to have my name in case you ever thought that i could be of help somehow. This journey has taught me some things, your grandson might benefit somehow, and i want him to! Maybe i can help out, or, as in the chess and socker ideas, i can't.
Just keep my name somewhere. The preteen and early teens are really tough, but you'll make it. Arm yourself with as much info as you can. I can point you in some of the right directions.

Hi L.,

I think the Hurst Public Library has a chess club for kids, but I'm not sure they have it during the summer. Also, I'm not sure what ages they accept (it may be for junior high kids?). Anyway, you might check it out!

Good luck!

Check with the Summerglen library at Basswood and Beach in N. Fort Worth. I don't know if they still have a chess club, but they have in the past.

Hi L.,
I do not know of a specific chess club, but you might be able to get more information from FEAT. They are located in North Richland Hills and their web address is: www.featnt.org
I know they have an Aspergers support group and they may also have play groups.
