I am going to tell you the name we're thinking of for our baby girl, which I KNOW is asking for all kinds of snarky remarks about it, but I think I'm prepared for that. (I say 'I think' because I'm hormonal, don't forget!) Anyhow, we're NOT telling any family/friends, as we DON'T want to hear the snarky remarks from them... but I figured it wouldn't hurt to tell all of my cyber-friends!
Anyhow, we're thinking of Ruby Catherine L. (2 syllable last name.)
Thoughts? (I don't expect everyone to love it, but be gentle, please!)
I think I'll get some snarky remarks because there is inevitably THAT person who will feel it's her purpose to tell me what a stupid name it is... it happens to everyone on here who asks about names...
AWWWW, thank you, Theresa!! (PS, I also LOVE the name Theresa... :)
You all are making me feel so good about this name that I already LOVE! THANK YOU!

Hi L. (aka Ruby Catherine's mom), ;)
I have not read any of your responses so I hope you did not get too many of those opinions from 'those who feel it is their duty to tell you how stupid it is'. LOL... I think is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL name. Ruby Catherine sounds so classy and elegant. I love it. Ruby is not a name that you hear very often which is so nice. With a name like that, I would imagine your daughter as being very sweet and delicate. A L. girl who loves dresses and tea parties. :) Congrats on your L. girl...I would go with it...it's so pretty!
Have a great day..

I think it's pretty. My great aunt is named Ruby. I think the "old" names are recycling through. As long as it's not Dorkas or something, I think you're good. hehe!
You might find no one really comments on the name. We named our daughter Violet Rose, and we absolutely love it. It fits her well! But, we also know that there are probably plenty of people who hate the name. We've never had anyone be rude or give snarky comments, though. So, I hope you get the same thing!

Oooohhh, I like!
It's different, but not crazy weird. It's classic, but not old-timey.
As for me, I would only tell a mother the name they choose could maybe be altered if it was Chlamydia (which I have heard). or if it was spelled Rueybee or something crazy that would only bring torture to a child having to constantly spell and pronounce the name for the rest of their life.

I love love love Ruby.......
My daughter was born in July and that is her birthstone. When she got her ears pierced, she got rubies and I explained that this was her birthstone and she said that she had heard Ruby as a name (she was 6 at the time). I said yes, it was also a name for a person too........and we both agreed that we liked it. She said (remember age 6 :) that I should've named her Ruby since that's her birthstone. And we joked around about it and I called her Ruby the rest of the day. .......I still sometimes call her Ruby when we're being goofy.

I like it!! I love classic names and Ruby is indeed classic! Im pregnant and our girl name we picked is "Pearl" also classic, and pretty much the same style as "Ruby" I got a lot of flak for it too. But this is my third baby, im totally ignoring all the bad comments. Im sure a lot of people associate Ruby with being an old womans name. but you can tell those people the same thing i tell everyone.
By the time our daughter will be old enough to get made fun of for having an old lady name, there will no longer be old ladies with that name. Perhaps sad but true.
All great names make a comeback.

I think it's cute. It isn't very common, which is a huge plus in my book. Congrats on your little girl. Yeah, people can be unthinking about sharing negative thoughts about names before a child is born. They tend to hold their tongues after the baby is here and already named. The only advantage I know is if you are missing something odd about the name. We had friends who gave their son the initials: STD. Oops. Another almost named theirs William Rueben. My husband said, "Oh, Bilirubin!" You know, the stuff that is too high if you have jaundice. They changed it to William Asher. LOL

My maternal grandmother's name was Ruby. She hated the name!! I personally think it is darling as a child and mature as an adult. I have a friend who has a little Ruby..about 16months old. She fits her name and everyone here loves the name. I have not heard any snarky remarks. My sister in law almost name their second child Ruby...but it was a boy.
I think it is a very sweet name. Go with it...be confident when you tell your family/friends...they look like fools when you state it with joy and confidence and they THEY ruin the moment.
Good luck and best wishes for a joyful moment at your baby's name coming out party amid family/friends!!

I think it is the name of an old soul... you know those people that you just look at (no matter the age) and think you have already seen it all or people say she is 5 going on 50. So, as they say "does the name fit?" Are you carrying an old soul? I think it will be not the right name if she is not an old soul. I hope that makes sense to you.

Besides, who cares what anyone else thinks? Your child. You get to pick the name. Children aren't as mean as you think when it comes to names. I mean, let's not name our boys Leslie, but besides that, right?

Great name! It is very important (I think, anyway) to give names that work when they are 5,15, 55 or 95 and all these names do this. Also, Ruby is traditiional but not one you hear a lot these days so it's both traditional and new-sounding. (I hope. We named our daughter after her great-grandmother and knowing no other kids with that name and it is now one of the most popular girls' names for her age. Oh well!). Keep the name you chose!

I always do rhymes with names for obvious reasons! My little cousin said she was going to name her dtr "Savannah" which of course we warned her she would be called "Savannah Banana" and she has been and HATES it! That being said, Ruby is not a common name and I like unusual names as I made up my own daughters name. Just my opinion but thought I'd mention it. Good luck!!!
