Ask for Exchange on a SLIGHTLY Damaged Couch?

We just got our $2000 leather sofa delivered yesterday, and the leather is scraped off on a small part. It' s on the arm of the sofa (right about where your thumb would rest) and it's only two small scapes about the size of a hole punch in notebook paper. The color difference where the scrapes are is very significant (since the couch is dark brown leather).

I'm not sure whether it is petty to ask for an exchange or not. One part of me thinks the damaged part is pretty small (but still noticeable to me) but the other part of me thinks the couch was $2000! I would not normally spend that much on a couch, but it was a necessary purchase to accomodate my husband's back pain.

What do you think?

What can I do next?

It sounds like it is in a noticeable place, so I would definitely see about getting a new one. It would bug me forever if I didn't.

I would ask for them to fix it, that's what i had to do when we bought our dinning room table. The store sent someone out that day and fixed the scratch and now you would never notice it.

I would give the store an option...either repair it to a satisfactory condition or replace.

I would contact the store you purchased it from and tell them it was damaged. Leather is unique in that it can be fixed unless the cuts are too deep. They may be able to send someone out who will fix it on the spot. Win win for both you and the merchant.

You paid $2000 for a "perfect" product. If this is a natural "flaw" or "color variation" of the leather, that's O. thing...but a defect is another.
I would definitely call the place that you bought it--explain, and let them come & look at it. Maybe they can repair it, if not, I think they should replace it. Good luck!

I totally get the need to purchase quality furniture to accommodate back issues...people would think I was crazy for spending $1500 on a desk chair for my home office but I need it (and it is amazing).

Did you sign off on the delivery that everything was in good condition and you were accepting it? That may get them out of it. If you have a great store that is willing to work with you, that is fantastic. Give them the nicest call (or go in if you can) and explain the situation.

Good luck!!

I would call. DEfinitely. A $2,000 sofa should not arrive damaged, no matter how small the damage is on it. Beware though. We found damage on a sofa once and the store refused to exchange it for us, because we did not note the damage upon delivery. We didn't notice it until a few hours later. Ours was a small spot, hardly noticeable, but I was pretty disappointed the company wouldn't work with us. We never dealt with them again. Our newer sofa purchase has been with a company that has been fantastic to work with!

I would want it replaced ASAP. When you received it, did you have to sign something when it was delivered, and did you make a note of it on that delivery receipt? I hope so, it will make your request go alot more smoothly. The store will sell it as a scratch and dent when they take it back from you, or give you a discount . Good luck!

I'd return it. At the very least, you need to mention it and indicate you are dissatisfied. they may choose to discount it for you.
Something similar happend to us - our leather sectional had three big gashes down the back (where they cut or opened something) and we flat our exchanged it for a new one, but had to wait with no sofa for two weeks. I know this is smaller, but still, same principal.

When you purchase something new, that means the store is taking your money and giving you something new and undamaged.

If you feel the damage is significant enough to warrant a repair or an exchange, go ahead and do it. The store is used to such things. The sooner you do it, the better. I hope they can give you a new one that has no scrapes on it.

Call the store you bought it from. They should have had you inspect it at delivery. They also should have a furniture deluxer available to take care of that. Lots of leather is fixable.

Absolutely. It seems that most every single delivery company we have ever had has damaged our things getting them into the house. Sometimes I didn't complain. Sometimes I did. Be prepared for a fight. for 2000, I certainly DO expect things to be damage free.

The last time was with our washer and dryer when they were new. They told me they would not exchange it because I didn't see the damage immediately. I called them the next day. They said if I didn't notice it right off the truck, tough luck. I did get 50 bucks off. I was mad because, what if I wanted to put them upstairs in my kitchen at a future date and time?

I would ask them to exchange it they delivered a defective product. Actually I would have checked it out before it was brought into the house and if I had noticed the damage I would not have accepted the delivery.
Don't feel bad or think it is petty to ask that the company make it right. You spent a good deal of money on it and it should have been delivered undamaged.

If I spent 2K on any item, it better be in pristine condition. So yes, I think you are completely entitled to a perfect product. Consider this: we often purchase our appliances from a Sears Outlet. MOST items there have a teeny tiny cosmetic flaw. Those items were sent back by customers who demanded perfection in their purchases. We bought an $1100 dishwasher for $500 because it had a small, barely noticeable scratch. However, this is why many companies now demand that you inspect the item upon delivery. You may or may not have a leg to stand on depending on this companies' policy.

I could tell you how a company will react if I knew where you purchased.

Depending on that... I say call. What can it hurt?

If it's bugging you I'd ask to exchange it. You paid full price. I had a similar experience when my appliances were delivered. I had been waiting years for new appliances and when they delivered my stainless fridge it was scratched where they had secured the straps. The damage was pretty minor but the scratches were definitely visible. I had the company exchange it and while I felt a little funny about it (I usually let things go because I feel bad asking) I'm glad I did because it would have annoyed me.Good luck !
