My niece's four children all have terrible asthma they live in Ohio and her doctor is telling her that maybe she should think about moving to Arizona because it will help with the kids asthma. Can anyone tell me if this is a myth or if moving to Arizona will help with the children's Asthma.
She also read that getting a cat for some reason helps. They got two kittens but it has not helped. The kids love the kittens but it didn't help at all with the asthma.
Any suggestions to pass along would be appreciated.

My mom grew up in Illinois but she was always having problems with Alergies they got so bad that my grandparents were told that the best thing to do is to move to AZ. They moved here the next summer and my mom never had any other problems. So maybe its the same for Asthma. That is really strange. Hope this helped!
my mom was told the same thing and honestly it was true for a while. however when all the docs started telling their patients that they all moved and brought new plant life and such from where they came from and now it is no different. i have had asthma all my life and i find if i am in a climit where as my grandpa would say i don't have to cut the air before i breath it i do alot better. somewhere in the higher altitude.
My son is 4 and he has asthma. We moved to Arizona a year ago from Missouri and I didn't notice any improvement so I think all that is a myth. Besides, my allergies just got worse when I moved here and they also have Valley Fever out here. Sounds like your niece needs to seek out another opinion - asthma and cats?? What is that doctor thinking??
It's a myth. I thought the same thing when I moved here from Massachusetts but my ashma actually got worse. If you'll notice especially during the summer that the news will have warnings about air quality. It's not uncommon for it to be in the red and the newspeople will actually tell you to minimize exposure if you have breathing problems.
Ditto w/Becky. My neighbor's son is 10 and has asthma. She said he is deathly allergic to cats and has been taken to ER several times because of friends that had cats or it coming off of their clothes at school, etc. Although they have 3 dogs, he is not allergic to dogs.
I'm allergic to cats and just can't stand the smell of dogs either and my son is allergic to both so bad to get hives, thank gawd not anaphalacytic shock. Definitely get allergy tested and see if it's not just the pets but the foods you eat. My son is 3 and allergic to corn, eggs (cooked), so far no probs with baked in like cakes, eggo waffles, etc., and no shellfish or nuts til he's 4. But although he's not allergic to soy..he can't have soy milk because he gets green diarrhea. TMI I know.
But I can say from being from California and having friends living in Oregon, I don't have such watery eyes here in AZ like I did there.

nope!! I have heard of all of those things as well and none have helped my son. I will tell you what did. Since birth he suffered from breathing problems, and we had to do breathing treatments on him 3-5 times a day. Now he is a healthy happy 3 1/2 year old who runs non stop! I looked into my home. Our homes are 3 times more toxic than the outside air. I have a lot of info on this matter since it was such an issue for us. I started by getting rid of all the toxic chemicals in my house. My Ped. told me to use all "natural" cleaners to start. Well I got a book and started to make all of my own cleaners and I noticed his breathing improving a little over time but my time and wallet were little. I then found a company that ships straight to the house all natural cleaners, products for the home and I truly thank them for my sons health. Let me know if you want more info. I have a lot of it! First off, cats will make asthma worse. Period, end of story. There are supposedly a few breeds that "don't have dander", but my daughter (who has terrible allergies) is allergic to almost all cats. My niece has cats and dogs, and the poor thing now has an almost permanent cough. Dust, pets, some houseplants, some of the more heavily perfumed candles, plug-in scents, all of these things can trigger asthma.
The most important thing is to get two, maybe three opinions on what exactly the form of asthma is. One of them might just have bad allergies, one of them may be triggered by exertion, there are many, many different things but pets are never a good idea, and I have NEVER heard of pets making asthma better!!
