Hi,

I gave birth 6 months ago but am still taking my prenatals...I figured they're loaded with all sorts of good stuff and when we try to conceive again, I can be assured that I have enough of what I need in my body...Is anyone else doing the same?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Yes! I've been on mine for years because my oldest was born with a cleft palette! I need extra folic acid and since we don't use BC I am always prepared. :)

My doc recommended I stay on them after my first was born as I was breastfeeding, and when I stopped that, we were trying to have another - so I was on the prenatals for about 3 years!

I'm still taking prenatals, however, they aren't the prescription ones that my Dr. gave me. I just buy the ones from Target and I take a seperate DHA pill too. My pediatrition says its good for my baby since I am also breastfeeding my daughter too, she's almost 7mo.

Yes. I stopped and realized there was no point. Spoke to my doc and he said it was fine. I don't tolerate most vitamins and strangely was able to handle these so they remain, and will remain, my daily vitamin.

I'm too old for prenatals. LOL! But I do believe everyone should be taking a good multivitamin as I think it is impossible to get all you need in your diet. Vitamins are my busy so of course I really believe in them. So, if you are happy with your vitamins then why not?
How about your baby? Here is a link to a vitamin powder for babies to consider:

There really is no reason to go off them. I think "prenatal vitamin" is an unfortunate name because women think they are only for pregnancy, but really you can take them throughout childbearing years. And as you said, that way you are already taking them when the time comes to have another baby. Over the counter ones are fine too if you no longer have a Rx.

Hi, I have 11month old boy, and I'm still breastfeeding. So, I do take my prenatals, it's important for both you and your baby. I am planning on doing that till I stop breastfeeding, end of March-April. Afterward, I will just continue taking fish oil and multivitamins. I think you are doing the right thing.

My little boy is 2yrs old. I STILL take my prenatals. My little boy still nurses before bed (trying to wean him), but since he hasn't been weaned I figured it's good to add the extra vitamins to my body. Not only that, but my husband and I will be trying for another baby before too long, so why stop the prenatals? Even if you don't plan on becoming pregnant again soon, vitamins are good for you.... they won't hurt you. ;) Take Care.

Yep -I took prenatals before I ever even wanted kids! They really helped my nails and hair. My youngest is 15 months now, and I'm still taking the last bottle I got with him (a giant Costco size)because they haven't expired yet. Can't hurt!

My girls are 6 & 3 and I still take prenatal vitamins. Everyone should take vitamins and prenatals give you everything you need in one pill. If you are planning on having more, don't stop taking them. Studies prove that folic acid is critical in having a healthy baby, keep it up. For me, I am not doing anything to prevent another pregnancy, so I want to make sure that I am as healthy as I can be, if another comes along.

I continued for about 18 months as I was nursing that whole time. If you're not nursing you could switch to a regular multivitamin, but if you're planning on trying again any time soon I'd stay on them.

Like others said, if breastfeeding, then it's important to keep taking it. Also, if you start trying to conceive, you want to make sure that you're getting enough folic acid (helps prevent premature birth and all kinds of other challenges)... the key to folic acid that a lot of people don't know is that it's important to be taking it during conception. Often by the time you know you're pregnant, it's too late. As for taking a prenatal when not breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to conceive - I personally would not. It has higher doses of most vitamins and minerals that you need, and some of those can stock-pile in your body. I like the recommendation someone once gave me, which is to take a children's daily multivitamin so you get a balance of all the essentials, without it being over the top.

Good luck!

I've been postpartum for 21 months (almost 22) and still take a prenatal vitamin. One of our local pharmacies has a program to get them free (Rx grade).

So, I've stayed on them.

I really need to check with my OB/GYN to see if it's a problem, but I'm not aware of anything.
My Oncologist wasn't concerned that I was taking them when I started Chemo in June, 2008 and hasn't said anything about them being on the med list since.

I'd always check with your personal physician/pharmacist just to make sure there isn't a risk you're not aware of, though

If you're breastfeeding, it's important to keep taking your prenatal vitamins for sure! It helps to make sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs so you can have enough to pass along to your baby. My doctor actually told me that it's not a bad idea for all women of childbearing age to take a prenatal vitamin as long as it doesn't give you stomach troubles, because the time when the baby most needs the extra vitamins is before most women even realize they're pregnant. She recommended just taking the generic Target brand or whatever, so as not to be spending a small fortune on the vitamins, and I've basically been taking them since the time we were trying to conceive our now 6-year-old daughter.
