Are Mamograms Supposed to Hurt?

I have not yet had one on these (I am 28) but my mom has them and always says they HURT real bad, like they are squishing TOO hard. Can anybody tell me their experience with this? I always thought it was normal to hurt, but I am just not sure. Her TaTa's are large but saggy/long (as are mine!) so maybe that plays a factor in the pain? Thanks for the advice!

I just had my first one last Feb and I'm so glad I did it. I love knowing at this point I'm in the clear.
I had the best lady do mine (in Novato) and it hurt, but it wasn't PAINFUL. The best advice I got was don't look down at how flat your boob is :O) I don't have big boobs and it wasn't too bad. The ladies in the waiting room were funny when they heard it was my first time, which helped too. It is about as quick as a DDS xray, once they get your boob in there. They did 4 total on me. The front boob, so to speak and the more painful is kind of under your arm (the part on me that hangs out of my bra).
Someone also posted a question about 1st time mammograms earlier in the year and had over 20 responses, you could look for that one if you don't get what you are looking for with your post.
Best of luck!

Unfortunately to get a good picture you do have to be "squished". Getting shots aren't fun either but both are necessary "evils".

It really depends on the tech who administers the mammogram. Yes, the breast gets squished, and it can hurt, but it doesn't have to. My mom found a really good clinic where the tech is thorough but gentle. We go every year.

Yes....and if you are uncomfortable with the technician, please say something. I once had a tech who bragged that she only worked SIX MONTHS a year and lived at her vacation home the rest of the year because she made so much money as a mamogram tech...Well she kept screwing up and having to redo...the third time I told her she better get it right that time because I wasn't doing it again.

I want a tech who works on a regular basis!

Blessings.......

C.,
I have had several and only one was painful. The tech seemed to be more agressive than the others. I think also with the newer machines it makes it easier to get what they need without so much sqishing.
