Hello. I am a first time mommy to be and am a little unsure about some of the do's and dont's of pregnancy. I have heard that it is not good to take a bath while pregnant, that it can cause an infection that will hurt the baby. Also, is there a limit on the ammount of standing or lifting? I work as a manager in a bowling alley so I am standing anywhere between 4 to 12 hours straight a day. I havent been able to make a doctors appointment yet due to not having insurance so I dont really have anyone else to ask about these questions. And of course I have about a thousand others but I figured i'd start with these first.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks soooooooooo much to all of you who took the time to read and reply!!! It is so comforting to be able to come here and ask the questions that I would normally find kind of silly or embarassing because I know that if I feel like this or question certain things probably a lot of other moms have to. Thank you again everyone for your caring and support!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Susan!! I haven't heard of baths being bad while you are pregnant, I would agree with just no extremely hot baths. I worked at a fast food job the whole time I was pregnant, there is no limit to standing with a normal pregnancy. Also I always heard with lifting it is just what you are use to. I would recommend the book "what to expect when you're expecting", I think it is good for a first time mom and has a lot of answers to questions in it and it tells you everything that is happening each month and what you can expect.

I agree, baths are fine. I lived in the Bath tub with my second one. It was the only thing that relieved nausea and aches and pains. Research shows now, that you should not take extremely hot baths, ie, no hot tub. I am a pharmacy technician and was worked until I had my baby being on my feet 8 hours a day.

If insurance for the doc is an issue, check with your local health dept or planned parenthood, they have programs that are based on your income or free. Get to a doctor. Get good medical care during your pregnancy. If you are not already doing so, go to Walmart and get you some prenatal vitamins. They are very similar to what you get as a prescription. Check the folate level in them and if is under 1 mg (probably 800 mcg) get a bottle of folic acid and take one of them along with the pre natals. Give this baby and you the best chance ever.

I took baths with both of my pregnancies and my kids were fine. Well, they are teeangers so the long lasting effects of baths should be studied. lol

If you don't have the book "what to expect while your expecting" get it today. It is Awesome. Almost nothing will surprise you if you get that book. It's pretty cool knowing what to look for that will happen next.

Also after baby arrives "what to expect the first year".

Baths are ok as long as they are not too hot. When I am pregnant, I can't even take a really hot shower without feeling dizzy. I also couldn't hand wash the dishes for the same reason. Just having my hands in the hot water for more then 5 minutes would make me feel like I was going to pass out. As for what you can and can't do, listen to your body. Most people can go about all of their normal activities while pregnant without any issues but you will probabaly notice that you get tired more easily. Stay away from medicines as much as possible. Tylenol is ok and there are a few others on the listed that are ok but it is just better in general to stay away from them all if you can. As for the insurance, would you possibly qualify for Medicaid? I don't know the requirements but it would be worth looking in too. The sooner you can get an appointment with a doctor the better.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I loved that time of my life! Enjoy every second of the wonder and feelings of a tiny new life forming inside you!

HOT baths (and showers) need to be avoided so your core body temp doesn't rise, but you should be okay to take a warm bath. The baby is in a safe/sterile environment until your water breaks, which is why you have to go to the hospital immediately when that happens.

As long as you don't increase your activity without a doctor's go ahead, don't worry about it. If you are usually standing, then there shouldn't be a need to change that unless you start having symptoms (cramping, dizzyness, etc).

The book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" has a lot of useful/helpful information. Feel free to post whenever you have more questions. This is a wonderful resource!

oh congradulations to your new family! i'm so excited for you! i do understand being scared. you're in the right place sister. lots of love in this place. be careful about the baths. the thing you don't want is a hot bath (my favorite kind) the reason is you don't want to heat up the amniotic fluid. it would be like putting your baby in a hot tub! if you have any more ?? or need to vent, know we're all here for ya. God bless.

Get the book "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy". It's frank and funny too. It won't scare you like the "What to Expect When Your Expecting" book does. On just about any topic regarding pregnancy, childbirth, raising a child, etc. there will always be many different viewpoints. You have to pick what works best for you. Hopefully you can get some prenatal care soon too. I love this website because you're visiting with other moms who have gone or are going through the exact same stuff. You can also check out www.babycenter.com for more info. on what to expect throughout your pregnancy.

As for the bath, my opinion, is to try to avoid them. You'll also want to avoid long, hot showers or saunas too. The concern is about raising the body temperature and a bath can increase your risk for yeast infections while you're pregnant.

As for the standing or lifting...see if you can take more frequent breaks to get off your feet while at work or maybe you can sit behind the desk. Most likely, you don't have to make many changes in this area because your body is already accustomed to doing these tasks. Pregnancy does take a toll on your body so just be sure to listen to what it's telling you and try to rest/nap if you can. I'd definatly make sure you're taking folic acid or over-the-counter prenatal vitamins too. Most of all, try to enjoy it! You'll be so excited once you can start to feel your baby move and grow inside you!

Congratulations! Children are a blessing!

Baths are fine, its not an infection risk its raising your body temp too high. Very hot baths, hot tubs, saunas etc are not good. There shouldnt be a standing limit unless you're high risk for some reason but heavy lifting can be bad.
