J.P.
When my 9 yr. olds get home from school, I am telling them that they need to brush their teeth and then get in the van to get to a dentist appointment. They will be shocked a bit because I always let them know about dentist and doctor appointments ahead of time. I will tell them that I completely forgot to mention it but that their dentist needs to see them again even though they were just there 3 months ago. (I am pretty good with putting on acts and surprising them.) Their dentist is only a few minutes away and instead of driving there I am going to pull into Baskin Robbins for a special after school ice cream treat!
I couldn't say something that would actually cause a huge disappointment such as saying I am pregnant like Rachel mentioned below. My daughter has always wanted me to get pregnant again and to say that I was (even for only a minute) would make her very upset to find out that I really wasn't pregnant. She wouldn't probably be so made at me and I want it to be fun!
Now my kids don't mind if what I say is false and it turns out to be a relief. An example of this is when I set the clocks early by 30 minutes in the morning on April 1st last year and they were telling me to hurry up because they thought we needed to leave for school. I said.... "Oh, I just need a few more minutes" They don't like being a minute late for anything so they began to get worried and said, "PLEASE mom hurry up and get your coat on." I replied, "Why??? It's only 8:20 April Fools!" They LOVED that they had 30 minutes to play and I let them play their Nintendo DS's before school.
Have fun!
