Anything to Help "Coarse" Hair Soften Up?

I have thick coarse hair - not curly or kinky, stick straight (ever since high school at least) and it seems like my son has inherited this. I have to keep his hair very short 'cause if it grows out much it just sticks stright up on the top of his head and looks silly (it's not curly - staight as a board). I've noticed other kids with silky soft hair that just lays down on their head so nice and flat. I wonder if there's some product or dietary change that will ACTUALLY help his (and my) hair become more soft and silky - or is this just genetics and we're stuck with it?

What can I do next?

My son is biracial and has coarse hair (both curly and straight). I use a product on his hair that is called Mixed Chicks. It has worked wonders on his hair. I also do a cococut oil (Hot oil) treatment to his hair that works great. Cococut is a natural relaxer. I buy a tib of it at the health food store and buy a bottle from a beauty supply store (that you would use to appky hair dye). I fill the bottle about half way and then put the bottle in hot water to liquify the oil. Once it is liquified, I apply the oil to his hair and scalp. I let it sit for about 5 minutes (my son is only 3 so its hard to get him to sit still for very much longer). It makes his hair silky and so very soft.

The products you use can help with this. i too have course thick hair, mine does have a wave to it. I wash it with a Redken shampoo and conditoner made for thick coarse hair or i also like the K Pac repairing shampoo, it works great. Also, before I dry my hair i use a straightening balm like the Redken Align. Not to much it will make it greasy!! I am not sure what to do about your son, but i hope this might help you! I also use a round brush to dry it, helps smooth it!

I was getting my kids hair cut recently and when they were finished I noticed that their hair was amazingly soft. I asked the stylist for the name of the product and it is CHI silk infusion. I immediately bought some and we all have the softest hair now. It is quite expensive but you need to use only a very tiny amount.

Another thing that affects my hair is the water I wash it with. My hair comes out really soft if I wash it with softened spring water.

Vinegar is a great conditioner and can improve cleanliness and shine. Add 1 tablespoon in your hair as you rinse it. Dandruff can make your hair look dull and when you use vinegar it makes it disappear. I don't know if you have this problem or not. But, you have to massage it in your scalp before you shampoo. It's also good to control frizziness and dry damaged hair.

I would like to suggest two things: 1. Get a really good chlorine filter for your shower head. I found Sprite Showers, HO2-WH to be awesome. Look 'em up at www.spriteshowers.com. Chlorine is brutal on hair, it totally dries it out. It also wrecks havoc on our bodies as well. Also with a swimming pool, get hair wet before jumping into the pool so it doesn't just wick up the elevated chlorine pool water. 2. Throw away any hair product with SLS (sodium laryl sulfate) or any of it's derivitives in it. It's hard to find them. We have a wonderful line at www.youngliving.org/yljohn if you're interested. I also add a little unrefined coconut oil to my hand and wipe it through my hair after I use it on my skin. Guess that was three things :-). Have a great day!
