Anything to Help a Cold While Pregnant?

I am newly pregnant and have a horrible cold. Stuffed nose, coughing, congestion, runny nose, sore throat. I rarely get this bad and it has only been about 3 days, but wondered if anyone has suggestions that would help me. I have tried saline nasil spray, humidifier, and neti pot. Can't even rest/sleep with all the stuffiness. Plus, my little guy (21 months) has it too. =( Just looking for any suggestions to ease the symptoms.

What can I do next?

I am in the middle of a cold myself. My OB (I called yesterday) stated that i could have Tylenol Cold/Sinus, regular Sudafed, and/or regular Robitussin (no DM). I have had to sleep propped up so that I can breathe better. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

I'd ask your OB/GYN about using Tylenol to help with the inflammation that may be causing your nasal passages to swell and create the congestion.

Otherwise, I'd say you're doing all the safe, recommended things.

My only other advice (which might be hard with your 21 month-old) is plenty of rest. Colds are viruses, so they have to run their course which is likely to be different for everyone. If possible, sleep when he sleeps and worry about household things after you get well.

Hope you get to feeling better.

I got pregnant then got a really bad cold too...I think it has to do with 1 immune system taking care of 2 people that brings down your ability to fight it. Unfortunately, there really isn't anything you can take. In the last trimester if you get this sick you can take tylenol products but not now. Check with your doctor but you are doing what you can.

the way i make my oregano tea is this :
one pan of water, sprinkle oregano (i use flakes) over the top until it covers the top of the water (more oregano for stronger tea) boil it until the water has darkened then strain off the oregano leaves and make the tea to your liking. i add lemon juice, and sugar or honey. i swear by this stuff. fixes you up in no time. my son is 23 months, i am 17 weeks pregnant and we both have colds too so i feel your pain :) another thing i do that maybe all in my head but i mix 7up and orange juice and heat it up in the microwave. works for me :)

Get some raw ginger and slice it as thin as possible, boil the slices for ten minutes and voila! Ginger tea that is AMAZING for colds.
Its healthy, safe and yummy. Add a little honey too because the ginger will be kind of spicy- but very good for your tummy if it's upset also.
:) Good luck!

I used Sinuclense or a netti(?) pot. You can find it at wal-mart. It works wonders at clearing those sinuses out!

Vicks on your chest if you are not working and when home and able, take a bath with the Vapor Johnsons & Johnsons bubble bath. Sore throat- I was told the Halls Breezers are fine which are the only ones I can stand anyway! Oh, and I did use a nasil spray that has menthol which worked great too, only used once a day though.
Good luck, I am right there with you! Due in June!

My OB gave us a list of preapproved meds. I think certain types of Sudafed are ok. I think you should call the nurse and ask because different doctors have different opinions. My OB would not give me antibiotics for bronchitis, but my friend's OB gave her meds for every little thing. They may even want you to come in for a flu test. good luck. feel better soon and drink lots of water.

Drinking penty of fluids is usually good. I have heard that pineapple juice can help break up the congestion(just make sure it's OK with any other meds you're taking). And chicken soup or peppermint tea with honey can soothe the sore throat.

Hi M.,

I refused all medications while pregnant and when I had a cold I made this mad concoction. In a boiling pan, pour one mug of water, squeeze one medium lemon (both sides), one spoon honey (I use raw local honey), and oreganal.

To use the oreganal, I pour about 2 tablespoons in a coffee filter and fold it like an envelope. When you put the top flap down, staples it and toss it in the tea you just made. Bring it to a boil and drink it hot without burning yourself.

I am better in 3 days every time!!!!

i would suggest lots and lots of rest with your head and shoulder elevated to help with the stuffy feeling. but the rest part is a bit hard to do with a 21 month old. if you have access to an indoor pool which is heated,(not to hot to go in while pregnant) it can help with alot of the congestion i would take a couple of trips to it. i would even look into some decongestent. check with your doctor first as to which they would be comfortable with you taking. i would suggest mucinex, not the one that says mucinex DM on it though. ask your doctor about it, i am not sure if they suggest it or not but my son who is now 15 took it a while ago and prevented his really bad chest cold from turning into his usual broncitis. he was so congested that he could hardly talk. after taking it for 4 days the congestion in his head and chest had let up enough so he could talk and sleep most of the night again.

I've always been told that Tylenol products are safe while pregnant - I take them. You can call your nurse to double check if you are nervous about it.
