I am 35 weeks pregnant with baby number 5. His head is unfortunately pressing on my sciatic nerve giving me terrible pain in my lower back and down my left leg, to the point I can barely walk. Has anyone experienced this, and is there anything I can do to relieve it, or do I just have to wait another month for the baby to arrive? With 4 other children aged 5,4,2,and 1 it is pretty hard to have to sil all day. Any advice helpful! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I am a childbirth instructor who also believes that chiropractic is the best thing for you right now. It's important that you see a chiropractor who is certified to work on pregnant woman. The one I refer all my students to is Cherie Sachiel-Flint, her # is ###-###-####. She is terrific and I know will help.

I have two helpful words....HEATING PAD! My daughter did the same thing and that was all that would help. Good luck and remember this is temporary. The best is yet to come. :-)

This is going to sound crazy but....make your hand into a fist & "dig into" the affected area. It helps...trust me. I waited tables with my first & some serious sciatic pain. If you prefer you can roll a tennis ball over it as well.
Take care

Hi there and congrats on the new baby!!! I had this problem as well with both my pregnancies. I found that going to the chiropractor was one thing but doing yoga was the other. I got a video for yoga made just for preggies and it really helped. The one move that seemed to help the most was the "Cat, Cow" pose. You get on all fours, arch your back like a cat for a few secs, then let your belly hang down (like a cow i guess) only as far as is comfortable for a few secs. This really helped me out with that pain, but of course call your doc (or her nurse) and make sure it is ok to do yoga. Hope this helps!!

Try a body pillow at night to support your belly and a maternity belt during the day. They both helped me a ton to sleep better and get through work.

I had that problem with my second baby. If you can get to a swimming pool and do leg exercizes (I would do leg circles and swing my legs back and forth in the water...side to side and forward to back)it would do wonders for you! Also, the weightlessness and coolness of the water is refreshing...

What my Dr told me that I had to do was lay down on a flat surface and someone help you GENTLY get your bended knee up to you chin as close to you chin as possible ( I know baby bellys get in the way) But do this a few times and it should go away. But if no one is there then you can do it alone. It might return but this simple exercise should help you get through the pain. Well good luck and I hope that you can get some relief.

Have you tried going to the chiropractor. My baby was laying on my sciatic nerve too and I went to the chiropractor and it helped. The chiropractor that I use was Dr. Shane Riemer - he doesn't do the usual poping of the bones but uses a tool for aucupunture. Good luck on the rest of pregnancy and I hope that the baby moves from the nerve because I know how painful that can be.

I have had the exact same thing with my last pregnancy and now this one. It's been much earlier this time due to having to tote my 27 lb. toddler around. I recommend a physical therapist or chiropractor. Chiro was the way I found relief.

Take care and good luck!

YES! Physical Therapy which you may not want to fool with since you are so close to the end....try yoga, anything that stretches out your hips. Therapy is the best because they can tailor them for your problem....I went to therapy with my first then just used the same exercises with my second.

Good luck, hang in there, it's almost over:)

Hi, I suffered from this with my first pregnancy and I was desperate to do anything to relieve the pain. I was even put on hydrocoritisone but refused to take any pain meds. I tried going to physical therapy but the results were not fast. So, I tried chiropractic care (covered by most insurances) and on the second adjustment I had no pain to mild. By the fourth adjustment I was back to normal. I did not believe on chiropractic care, but after that ordeal, I am a believer. Just make sure that the Dr. you go to is experience with pregnant women. I went to the Franklin Chiropractic off of Callaghan on the Medical Center. OB did not recommend or discourage, he basically said to do what worked as long as what they were doing was confortable for me. Good luck

A chiropractor. If you're near Wichita Falls, Dr. Cari Beesinger is worth her weight in gold. I've never talked to a pregnant woman who didn't love her chiropractor, though.
