i was on depo for 5 yrs and went off of it around xmas. my period came back in may, very light. in june, it was what everyone calls "normal" but i guess my homones weren't and i felt like i had the flu with bad diahrea and cramps. i'm due for it again ina few days and even though it hasn't shown up i woke up this morning with bad cramps, diahrea and bloating. then i took an aleve for the cramps and i vomited. i was on depo before for 3 yrs and my periods came back just fine and normal, nothing like this! so my question is to anyone who has been on the depo for that long: is this normal? according to my ob nurse it is, but i wondered if anyone else had a similar experience.

What can I do next?

I was on depo for about a year and had a hard time having a period (for about 2 years after) then I would have one, but my hormones were all out of whack. I would spot here & there but never regular. You might want to try some herbal remedies to ease the other symptoms until your hormones are back on track.

It's weird you sent this, because I also recently went off depo. I should've had a shot Dec. 27. I was on it for 3 years this time and I have not had a period yet. This morning I woke up in the middle of the night with bad cramps, diahrea, and dizziness. I didn't even think about it having to do with the depo.
The last time I was on it for 5 years and it took a long time to get my period back, but I don't remember having the cramps or diahrea. Although, I might have and just didn't associate the two things together.
I haven't ever heard of this happening, but I am having the same symptoms as you and we have been off the depo for about the same time. I don't know what else would have caused it, because I rarely ever get diahrea and nobody else in my family felt bad this morning. Maybe it is normal. Hope this helps.

I went off Depo in 1997 after being on it for 2 years (for cramps due to endo) when I had a gut feeling it was not a good idea to continue taking it long term. My periods did return within a couple of months and have been regular since. I did have severe cramps and (painful) loose bowel movements. I thought the cramps were because I wasn't taking bc anymore and the I never associated the bm symptoms with depo but I bet it was related. My estrogen tested zero. I began researching natural ways to eliminate the monthly pain and began trying the nutritional approach. I immediately noticed a decrease in my monthly pain with the more vegetables and less meat I would eat. Still it didn't make me change everything always. I had hoped the monthly pain would go away after having children but after having two children it did not go away. Finally, I stopped eating processed food and reduced my meat/dairy significantly. Most of the meat I do eat comes from clean sources (grass fed beef, free range chicken). I stopped my coca cola habit and increased my vegetable (especially leafy greans), whole grain (quinoa) and bean intake. Exercise (including yoga) and reducing stress have also been key. Within 3 months of stopping soda and improving my diet the monthly pain (cramps and bm) is gone completely and has been for 2 years. A good probiotic (supplement not yogurt) will improve your gut health and likely improve the diarea symptoms. I'm happy to chat more with you about what you can do to feel better sooner rather than later. ____@____.com www.cincyhealthcoach.com

I was on depo for a few years and went off of it because my face started to break out. It took months to get my period and even then months before it was regular again. That was several years ago and I still get major cramping and diarrhea before it comes. I recently started using a progesterone cream and that has helped tremendously with the cramps but not with diarrhea. Depo really screwed with my system - it has never been the same since and I think it was the reason I had a miscarriage at 15 weeks.
