Anyone Used Mirena?

I am pregnant with my second baby and was discussing birth control options with my OB for after the baby is born. After my first, I used the mini pill and to be honest, it made my hormones a bit too crazy. So, my doctor suggested that I use Mirena. I do plan on breastfeeding for a year. I was wanting advice either way on using Mirena. Also, if you used Mirena while breastfeeding, did you notice a change in your milk supply? Any advice would be much appreciated! I read the brochure the doctor gave me, but I would rather hear advice from moms who've used it! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I have had Mirena for over a year and have no complaints. My period is very light and my PMS is not as crazy as it used to be. I think that with any medication you take, it effects everyone person differently. I could never take birth control pills as I became a wicked mean person that I didn't like myself at all. Not to mention that my ex husband was so turned off by my behavior, I had no need to take birth control cause he had no want to have sex with me - HAHAHAHAHA!! Weigh out your options. Mirena can always be removed if it does make you feel loopey! Good luck!

I have no milk supply problem on it (as compared to my last baby when I was not on any birth control at all).
I've had Minera for 2.5 months so far (my baby is 4 months old now).

I got Mirena after my first child. Overall I have to say I am VERY happy with it. I actually wanted the copper one due to the hormones but due to a misunderstanding with the nurse they gave me Mirena instead. I was so upset after it happened, however now I would say that it was a good error. I have yet to get my period since I got it...which is a nice side effect. I don't have to think about it at all. It did hurt quite a bit when they put it in but after a few days it was fine. I've only had one child so I can't compare my milk supply with not being on it, however I don't feel like I had a problem with my supply. I breastfeed for 10 months. I still feel like I get mild cramps once a month. I assume it's when I would get my period. So all in all I would recommend it. I would get another one after any future children. Hope that helps!

Hi Lindsey,

I was on Mirena after I stopped breastfeeding with my daughter. My period completely disappeared after the first few months. At first I thought that was awesome, however into my second year I started to feel really strange. I had a lack of energy and could not do anything. I was very irritable and often felt like I was going to jump out of my skin. My husband was at his wits end. I went to the doctor who assurred me it was not Mirena and after a five minute conversation prescribed me an antideppressant. I started the pills and they intensified the way I was feeling so I immediately stopped taking them. My doctor prescribed a different pill but I did not take them. A week later I started my period and felt like my old self again.

Because my Wierd symptoms went away with my period I did not have Mirena removed. I figured since the doctor said it was not related it must have been a fluke. A few months later I started feeling "strange" again, so I immediately went in and had it taken out. I am on the pill again and although I hate taking it everyday. I am more than happy to be myself again.

I have talked to several other women who have had the exact same side effects of Mirena as I have - fatigue, lack of interest in everything, irritability and the crawling out of the skin feeling. I don't want to scare you, obviously Mirena is wonderful for lots of women. Just be aware of the potential side effects so that you can have it removed if the occur. It was too easy for my doctor to convince me it was my mind and not the Mirena product, when I KNEW better.

Good Luck to you.

C.
