I need to get my terrified 4 y/o to the dentist. I keep seeing the advertisements for Kool Smiles, she actually seems open to trying it. Anyone here tried it and which location.
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Hey everyone! Thank you all for your responses and advice. I think we have decided to go with Konikoff here in Harbour View. I finally had a couple people at my daughter's school say they have been there and loved it! Also, they are great with children. Thanks again!

Actually I think they were just profiled on 10 on your side for doing "too" much dental work on young patients...I may be wrong so please check that out! I have taken my son to Rosenblum, Barny and Hasty since he was 5! he loves it...he is now 17 and simply goes because they have a great relationship with the drs and ortho! and the video games! hope that helps!

I have been taking my kids to them for a while and I have been to the Janaf location in Norfolk and when we moved we now go to the location in Portsmouth off of Victory Blvd. They are really good and my 4 kids LOVE going to the dentist! This includes my 7 yr old son who has has to have a lot of work done. They also give the kids little toys and toothbrushes (usually disney) and flossers when they leave! Hope this helps!

I refuse to bring my children to Kool Smiles. They do a lot of unnecessary work and if the child is not cooperative, they put them in a strait jacket. A friend of mine interviewed there once and they asked her if she would be comfortable doing that (strait jacketing a kid) and she said No way! and walked out of the interview. I go to Dr. Huie over on McManus in Newport News and he accepts tricare if you are military. He is great, I wish he did adults too!

this place seems shady to me and they wont let parents go back with them while kids get cleanings and such.

Hi C.,
I took my daughter to the location on Victory Boulevard in Potsmouth. My daughter liked it but it was a little odd to me. You can watch your children though this porthole type window but they really don't want the parents to be in there with them. Their point is that it makes the children less tense. I guess that's OK for some but it caught me off guard. And then they can have so many children in the cleaning area at once and there was no place to sit.
For my son, who is one, I took him to Children's Dental World at the corner of Portsmouth Boulevard and Hodges Ferry Road. It is Dr. Joe's office and I like it there. When it is time for my daughter's next appointment she will be going there as well.

Nope, but when my kids were young we took them to Dr. Avent up in Denbigh. They were very kid friendly and took good care of my daughter who had a lot of cavities due to development when I was carrying her.

I have not tried Kool Smiles, but there a a couple of WONDERFUL pediatric dentists on Hampton Blvd. in Norfolk, not far from Norfolk General (1/2 mile). Drs Morgan & Hamlin. They are great. Both my boys have been going to them since they were 2. They are now 8 & almost 5. We go every 6 months and the boys actually look forward to it. The staff is very nice. Good luck.
