Anyone's Child Have Plagiocephaly and Was Fine, or Wore Helmet or Had Therapy?

My son is 9 months now. When he was 2 months the dr. told me that he didn't turn his head to the left very well and his face was asymetrical- and one ear was closer to his head than the other . So we started working on laying him to face the left. I had put him on his back to sleep until he was 4 months because I thought that was best to prevent SIDS. But it seems to have caused another problem. After his four month checkup the dr recommended the Diagnostic prostetics (sp) and got his head measured when he was 6 months. They told us he had a pretty severe case but we couldn't help but feel that they were "selling" the band. We decided to wait and see. Since he is on his tummy now-all the time and is mobile we have seen a major improvement.

I took him to the Dr. today for his wellbaby, and she basically told me that if we were going to do the helmet she wished we would have done it sooner. That he may not be 100% without treatment. I have mixed feelings because I want what is best for him, but I do not want to do anything that is going to heal on its own. We have already seen a HUGE improvement. So now I guess we are going to get the band, but I was curious as to if any Moms have gone through either the "helmet" or the "cranial therapy". If so what results and how long? I am just kinda down right now because I wasn't expecting the dr to say what she did and I feel guilty. But she did say he was much much better, I do not want him to grow up with a flat spot- and have problems. Also my husband read that one lady's daughter had this and she would not clap- and also would hold her hands out: as if to steady herself- all the time! He does this alot. The internet is so full of information- sometimes too much in my opinion. You are always going to hear about the "worst" situations, and rarely good news. So I wanted to ask you Moms for your information.

Please, experiences would be appreciated.
(I will be out of town for a few days so if I do not get online when I am gone I will read the replies when I get back on Saturday.)- THANKS!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to those who responded. We decided to go ahead and get him the Starband- he has had it on for 4 days now and is doing great!

I know this is a scary thing with your first son. I'm not sure how noticeable your son's flat spot is, but I can tell you my experience. My son (now 3) had the same thing, but my pedi. never suggested the helmet, we just took the wait and see approach. To this day if you run your hand on the back of his head you can feel that it is uneven. But, with his hair you don't notice a thing. Oh and he hasn't had any "problems" resulting from the flat spot. Good luck and I hope this helps alleviate the guilt a little! As moms we have way too much guilt!

I don't see any other responses yet. Others may have more information than I do.

I work with computers and the internet a lot and there IS a lot of misinformation out there. "Google it" is starting to be used quite a lot! I could "google" this subject but my advice would be along the line of getting more than just one doctor's opinion. I know there are some pediatrics departments who share perplexing problems or consult with one another when there are questions, but I've only found one such place years back.

Please get another doctor to examine and evaluate your child. The worst case scenario would be that your child would be no worse off. You might even learn more ways to help you learn ways to work with and help your child.

I really dislike "I told you so attitude" especially from a doctor. She told you about her evaluation and you weren't convinced the helmet thing was worth its price. She could have been nicer or at least not mention regrets like that. If there was anything to regret it should be that she hadn't suggested getting a second opinion (or third even).

You have a lot of mothers thinking of your story and praying all turns out well.

K.,
First of all, I hope everything turns out ok with your son.
My son is also 9 months old. He had torticollis (where his neck really only turned to one side), and as a result started getting a very noticeable flat spot. He was about 2 months old at the time and his dr. recommended lots of tummy time and physical therapy. He still strongly favored one side over the other and the therapist recommended a helmet.
It was really hard for us to make the decicion to go with the helmet, but after seeing a neurologist who also recommended the helmet, we decided to go ahead and do it.
He got the helmet on at 4 months, wore it 23 out of 24 hours for 3 1/2 months, then only at night. He just recently got it off and there is no flatness whatsoever.
I would definitely get a second opinion, but drs. recommend not to wait too long because babies heads are really easy to "mold" right now.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Let me know if I can be of additional help.

I don't have experience here BUT since I see that you didn't get very many responses I am going to put in my opinion.

Although I am not a doctor, I worked in hospitals for several years and the absolute BEST OF THE BEST are in the medical center. I am not saying there aren't great doctors in the suburbs but you need a second opinion and Texas Childrens Hospital in the med center is where you need to go.

Contact them and tell them your situation and find a doctor who specializes in your situation.
The medical center is a teaching facility which means they receive a LOT of money and they are up to speed on everything, have the best, most up to date equipment and they deal with hundreds of cases just like yours. Their experience is invaluable. People from all over the country come to Texas Children's for medical treatment and there is a reason why. Good luck.
