I was recently told by a dermatologist I have what is called a Fistula. I have been dealing with a wound that comes and goes for 6 years now. Finaly after 6 years and 3 different procedures I was told it was a fistula and until they remove the entire thing I will always have this wound. So my question to all of you is if you have heard of this or had to deal with one of these, what is the best type of doctor to go to? I have looked up a lot on the internet; and just like everything else it depends on what you read what type of doctor is best. Any advice of help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

a fistula is an area that no longer has tissue or good tissue. Wethere that be from prolonged infections, poor repairs, repeated damage. The protocol is basically the same. Go in get rid of all the old nasty tissue, possibly transplant new healthy tissue, stitch it up the best they can or do wet to dry dressings and allow the body to fill in the void on it's own.

This is all dependent on exactly where the fistula is of course. I had one under my arm from an ingrown/infected hair follicle. it was cleaned out, bandaged and left to heal on it's own.

As a RN I deal with patients that have fistulas in various areas of the body. I personally have never had one. My recommendation would be to go to a wound care clinic that is associated with a hospital. They have doctors that specialize in wound care so they will be able to give you the best options and plan of care. I know personally that the wound care center at Beaumont Royal Oak is wonderful. I work at Beaumont and had to go there after my 2nd C-section and all the doctors there were wonderful. If you have any addt'l questions or want more info feel free to email me. Best of luck to you.

Your derm. should have given you a referral. I can't imagine why they didn't refer you on. Call their office and ask specifically what you should do. If that fails, go see your primary care physician and ask them to refer you on.

Good morning T.. A fistula is an abnormal opening and it can be anywhere! Internal or external. The doctor you go to would depend on where it is. Hope this helps, L.
