You will not want to hear what I have to say, but hopefully someone will read it and take it to heart.
KEEP THEM!
Animals are not disposable when no longer convenient. I have had my cats for 11 years now and had cats all my life growing up. I became allergic to all cats about six years ago. I break out into hives, have shortness or breath and burning itching on my face, hands, and eyes. TOUGH *&^%.
I would never get rid of my daughter if such a thing happened to me because of holding her. That is what unconditional love is. Which I am sure your cats have shown you all these years and it is sad that you cannot do the same.
That being said, I got rid of our carpet for some beautiful vinyl "wood" flooring that fools EVERYONE that looks at/touches it. Which is more kid friendly anyhow. And I limit our fabric furniture and drapes. I do not let my cats in my bedroom, and I simply wash my hands after petting them. If I ever needed to (which I haven't yet, and I scored OFF THE CHART on the allergy skin test to cats) I could look into allergy medication.
But the reality is that it is not rocket science. They are my family and I will never thrown them out because of things they cannot control. Our shelters are overloaded as it is with people actually having to give away pets because they are losing their homes. Please reconsider your decision as it is not life threatening to you, but is to them.
