Help! My son is doing a project on Rhode Island. He wants to show the comparison of how small Rhode Island is compared to our home state Ohio. But I can't figure out how to do this. I googled and found a great picture that someone overlayed the outline of Texas on Germany, etc. That was cool. Would like to find something like that but can't online.
How can I find/make something like that? We would like to then turn it into a game somehow. The game is extra credit (and he needs the help) Need info on this ASAP! Desperate here. Been looking for something most of the day.
Thanks Denise for the simple obvious suggestion I couldn't figure out! I found a map, cropped it so it was bigger for ohio and RI and printed it out. Will cut it out!
As for the game, please keep ideas coming. The school is have 2 days of "state fair" where the projects will be on display in the cafeteria. The other classes in the school will look at and interact with the projects. We can also bring in food/beverages from our state as well. There is a trivia game on each state that the people will play and have to find the answers in the State Notebook the kids put together. The other game is for fun and extra credit. I like the soccer ball, verse baseball, golf ball etc idea but not sure if can figure out the conversions. I am tired we have been working on this project for a month now!
Thanks- keep them coming

So What Happened?

Found a map- cut out both states. That worked. Then burned it into a game with a soccer ball as ohio and 3 other balls differnet sizes to guess what the size of RI is. 1st day of the "state fair" was today. I am helping tomorrow but my son said it worked well!
Thanks for the great suggestions!

Print out a US Map. Cut out the state of Ohio. Trace the state of Rhode Island in a corner of Ohio and write "R.I." in the smaller space and "Ohio" on the larger space. Is that what you mean? As long as you cut out both states from the same map, they will be proportional.

I'd see what you can find via Google.com/maps and Google Earth (you'll have to download onto your computer).

I'd see if you can find a scale for reference (google.com/maps will give you a scale), and then find objects around the house.

If a soccer ball is the size of Ohio, which of the following 3 is the size of Rhode Island? Tennis Ball, Bouncy Ball, Basketball?

Good luck. The internet has answers to all. Also try Google.com/scholar

In case you do not already know this, Rhode Island is the corporate headquarters of Hasbro toys. http://www.hasbro.com/corporate/
Hasbro does most games and they also make Mr.Potato Head so if you have some regular games or Mr. Potato heads perhaps you could incorporate that into the report as a fun twist. A few years ago we were in Rhode Island and they had decorated, large Potato head statues all over Providence you might google that to see if there are photos on-line. Anyhow, perhaps something not everyone would think of when you think of Rhode Island, but a fun way to connect the state to kids:) Good Luck!

For a game, I would make a whole Bunch of Rhode Islands and then ask how many Rhode Island would it take to fill Ohio...California, Germany, etc. Is it a presentation. If it were a presentation then there would be different things you could do. But if it were just a project to be handed in or displayed, then that would be different?
