Anyone Know How to Get into Broadcasting?

I have always wanted to get into broadcasting. People say I have a great presence, pronunciation, and smile, and that I'd make a great newscaster. I also have a soothing voice. I have finally started losing weight and starting to feel more confident about my appearance and would now like to try my luck in regards to getting in front of the camera. I'd like to do something such as anchoring for the local news, weather, whatever. I am not expecting to be the next Barbara Walters or Katie Couric by any means. I am bilingual; however, I do not have any training in broadcasting. I have degrees, just not in that area. I tried to get into acting, but all the talent agencies I encountered here turned out to be a scam so I have sort of given up on that idea. I guess what I want to know is, if any of you do this for a living, or know someone who does this for a living, and what is required to get into the field. Also, if any of you know someone I could speak to, I'd appreciate it. I am also open to writing for a local publication if broadcasting isn't in my future. I want to do something fun and entertaining, rather than being chained to a desk in a job I hate for the rest of my life. Any advice/leads would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Seek out the colleges in your area and talk to the counselors. Find out what it takes to continue your education. You might not have to go too long to get another degree.

I'm in TX and we have a friend about to graduate from Oklahoma. She is very good at journalism and the program was exceptional. She is graduating in Dec which is 2 semesters late because she chose to intern at CNN in New York for 1 semester and then Washington DC 1 semester. She was at the Capitol covering stories, writing stories and learned so much.

Do your research and follow your dream! Best wishes

You will need to go back to school and earn a journalism or communications degree. This is an extremely competitive field and it takes a long time to become an anchor. You'll have to work your way up, beginning with off-hours shifts as a reporter covering less than glamorous stories. You won't start off in Miami ... think rural TV stations in much, much smaller markets. While in college, take advantage of any internship programs at local TV stations. That's what I did while studying journalism and it launched my career (although I went into public relations and interned in the station's community relations dept.).

Good luck!

I am not trying to discourage you, but here is what you will need...You will need to start in a small market (town) especially if you have no experience and no degree in the field. You will need to relocate! You will also need a demo reel of stories you have done - that will be your resume. I'm not sure how you would go about retaining that - most graduates have a reel when they leave college. There is a certain format to be used on the reel as well.

My husband and I are in the business and it is very hard to break into especially w/ no degree or reel. It is a dog eat dog business, you will need thick skin.

I agree w/ T.F. - contact a college counselor and ask them for advice. You could even contact anchors in your area and ask them how to go about it - most of them are accessible these days through the stations website.

Good luck!

Out of the box idea...create a local community news station via you tube or something. Pick a topic and do a story that your immediate or larger community mite enjoy that is not being covered. It could be good practice. the news could be centered on your immediate 5 block radius, on children/family related issues in the area, entertainment etc....

the negative is that you may receive unfavorable and unwanted criticism, but as someone else said below, you need thick skin in the business.
