Anyone Know Anything About the Puppy Apartment?

I have a female Great Dane that is 9 months old. This summer she mastered potty training. But we have has some very cold days (we had a few days that were -20 w/o wind chill). She Hates the cold and the snow. I did get a nice warn jacket that she loves and some boots to help with the cold on her feet. When I take her out she pee's right away. In the summer she had a area that she liked to poop in. We go to that area, but she will not poop out side. She stopped about 2 weeks ago. She will only poop in my down stairs living room. I have tried kenneling her or keeping with me and then taking her out side frequently (I had treats and was going to give her a jackpot of treats if she pooped out side, but no luck). She just would not poop so after a day I felt so bad about her holding I just let her go down and poop in my house (I know this was bad). So I am now looking at indoor solutions that we could both be happy with and ran into the puppy apartment. Anyone try this?? Does it work. I checked and they have a size big enough for my dog (I will most like take up my whole living room LOL)! Wondering is anyone else has a dog that is a wimp when it comes to cold and how do you deal with it?? She is in obedience classes and will someday become a therapy dog. She is otherwise such a great dog. Never chews on anything that is not appropriate, had great manors, etc. She was just at the vet so all good there. I'm wanting to sell my house in the spring so hopping what I do to get past winter is just a temp thing so that when spring comes I can go back to getting my house in tip top shape!!! I will talk to my trainer about it again. She thought something like potty pads would be ok to use through winter. She has big poop, but only poops one to two times a day so not a lot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Uff da!!! It got up to 20 today!!!!! I knew when I was able to take her out with out a jacket she should be able to stay out there long enough to poop and she did right away. It's not a control thing. Here in MN during the winter it gets so cold you can only be outside for 5 min with out getting frostbite. During the really cold days even with the jacket and boots she was just shaking! I think I will just do potty pads for those really cold days and next year she should have some fat on her so it will not be as bad.

Could you make a sheltered area outside for her to poop in? It shouldn't be too difficult to put up a roof and a couple walls. That way, she won't have to stand in the snow to go, and will be protected from cold wind. You could even buy some jumbo wee-pads to take outside with you each time so that she has a warmer spot to stand on. It would also come in handy to provide a shady spot for her in the summer.

I would hate the idea of getting her into the habit of going inside... I get that you are doing it out of desperation for her at the moment, but big dog= big poop! Lol.

I think before you do anything you need to talk to a professional who knows about your breed. Pretty sure you are not the first great dane owner who has had this problem. A professional will be able to say, oh yeah, they all do this because of that so if you do this all is well.

I had goldens, they did not like the summer heat here so, although they look odd, I would get a puppy cut every summer.

Figure out how to paper train her. My fil's dog does this and he has no accidents.

I hope that wherever she ends up as a therapy dog, that it's not in Minnesota. She will cause a lot of problems in her home if she does this. Talk to the people who place these service dogs and explain this to them so that they properly place her.

I went to the store this week and the sales lady told me that with the subzero temps we had (-40 with the wind chill), she put a sandbox down in her basement so her 2 dogs could go. She said she does this whenever the temps get really low. No one suffers. My neighbors dog even refused to go out Monday and Tuesday and they let him go on papers on the inside porch.
