Anyone Know About Jr. National Young Leaders Conference?

My 6th grader was "nominated by a teacher" to participate in a week long leadership conference in Washington DC. It seems like a good opportunity but it is very expensive and I am not sure it is worth the price. Does anyone have feedback (positive or negative) on this program?

What can I do next?

My niece went to this confrence last summer and she learned so much....from raiseing the funds through writing letters and going with her Dad to visit with others...to the actual trip, she had such a great time, and from what I understand, this is quite an honor and can open other doors for her in the future.
I feel like this is a wonderful oppertuinity for any teen, to learn about leadership and to step into it.
From what I understand only one kid per district is selected to go. During the week my niece was gone we got updates on her from her mom and there was a website where the downloaded pictures of what they had been doing that day. Another kid that had gone the year or so before got invited to the inaguaration. It is quite an honor

Never heard of it.

my 8th grader is a candidate for nationl Junior Honors Society but they do community service and don't go on conferences through 8th grade.

I'd check it out a little more if I were you.

Both my older boys participated in a week long National Youth Leadership Training thru boy scouts.... I think it was GREAT for them. here is a link for more information...

I have been told the programs are basically the same, except the boy scouts camp out. The cost is only $220. I'm sure the Washington DC one is quite expensive. My boys are all very intelligent and are always getting invited to special camps and conferences -- that have a HUGE price tag - and we cannot afford to send them. EX my 16 y/o got invited to some college in CA for a week long engineering camp - price $5000 plus airfare... just not happening!!!

Not sure if you child is a boy or girl -- I would research the web and see if there is a similar program closer to home.

GOOD LUCK!!

Congratulations to your child. If he/she continues on this path, they will most likely be nominated again whether you take the opportunity this year or not. My son has recieved this invite 3 times (different years/different teachers) but has never attended. Yes, it is prestigious and I'm sure they learn quite a bit, is good networking, as well as challenging and fun. My son is now a sophmore, and you will find there are many things out there that offer the same type of leadership training, of course maybe not in DC, but at the state level. In our case, at the time we were first invited (middle school) we felt he was too young to go. Not sure if that was a mistake or not (as a middle schooler its more for the student-and as a high schooler its more about the networking). Since then, he has not had the desire himself to go but is rather interested in attending the same type thing at an Ivy League school this summer - for college credit!
All this to say - you know your child. Will they benefit at this time? What are their particular interests? Do you wish for them to have this experience, and do you believe it will help them with their success, now and later.
I know - It's tough.
Best wishes for you!
