I am so sick of these party stores asking for so much money on party favors. Anyone have any suggestions where I can get some nice cheap ones? It's for my sons 4 year old birthday and we have invited girls and boys.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the input. I actually went to target and got some pencils & little notebooks in the Valentine / Dollar section and I have some Car Tattoos and Big bottles of Bubbles and then I will fill it with Candy. So I have to make about 15 bags and I spent about $20.00 total which isn't that bad.

L. ~ <BIG pet-peeve on this one ~ sorry>

OH I am SO tired of little bags of ‘stuff’ <not what they really are> that are handed out to our kids.
Old candy, itty-bitty games and toys that fall apart in the ‘party bag’ or on the way home IN THE CAR.
Recently it was our “turn” to give a parting gift <after our youngest had her 5th birthday in January>
– we looked at SEVERAL options.
Either ‘nerf’ balls, or packs of play-dough or something that is under $3 each and every child went home with a REAL TOY.

We settled on the pin toys called “pin impressions” bought every little one we found and spent LESS on them than having to put together little party bags: And the kids and parents are STILL talking about what a great gift/idea it was and how nice it was not to worry the younger siblings choking on any of the ‘crap’ in party bags.

:o) OUR two cents……… Good Luck.

BTW – Now, a SAHM of six kids ages from 22 to the birthday girl, age 5.

Hi L.!

Have you tried Deals? They usually have that kind of thing. Also, you may want to consider just putting candy or fruit snacks, stickers, and those kids of things. They take up space but don't cost a whole lot. Dollar stores (like deals) usually have those kinds of things too. Good luck!

In my personal opinion I don't like party favors. Usually nobody wants to spend a lot of money on them and as a result you end up with "stuff" that you really end up never using. I've almost always thrown out the treat bags that my daughter gets and she doesn't even miss them and never uses them.

If you want to do treat bags my suggestion is a small bottle of bubbles, buy bulk stickers and split them up, and throw a few pieces of candy in there. Then you're not spending too much money and you don't send the kids home with a bunch of stuff they will never even play with anyway. Kids love the punching balloon if you're looking for more to fill the bags with

Most Party Outlet stores are cheap or try a local dollar store for everything. I've bought colored paper bags that were cheaper thant the plastic loot bags in the past.

We just went to a party and they gave out little match box cars. Great gift for boys, and they are like $1 each. I loved the idea.

Hello--I also agree a lot of that stuff is junk anyway and in my house goes right in the garbage. It is so expensive and not worth it at all. Oriental trading does have some nice stuff if you want to pay for shipping. For my 4year olds b-day(she only had 9 kids there)instead of goody bags, I got them all a bucket with shovel attached (for the sand) I think they were .88 each at walmart. That way you are not wasting 3.99 on bags that go in the garbage. I put a bottle of crazy foam(for bathtub) pack of gum and a candybar in it and I think a bouncy ball. They were all happy.
The other response you got about giving each of the kids one small gift is a really good idea also. I think I am going to do that this year. Target has some good things in the dollar spot. Good luck shopping and have fun at your sons birthday!!

Hi L.:
Any little boy likes match box cars or even bubbles! You can make up your own bags by just going to Walmart or Walgrens. Have fun!

Try Dollar stores. I like Dollar Tree. I purchased nice ones for my son there for his birthday (they actually had sesame street). I can't promise what they have, but I went to town & purchased favors and plates and a table cover for $1 each. Like I said I recommend Dollar Tree as they usually have a nice selection. [The one I went to was on Barrington Rd between Schaumburg Rd & Irving Park Rd. This is in Streamwood. Not sure if this is close to you or not- but they have nice things there for cheap.]

Hi L.,

I absolutely agree with you. I would try dollar stores. They are awesome and surprisingly have soooo much to offer for party decorations and favors. You can even get helium balloons for a dollar. In my eyes, that can not be beaten. Good Luck and Happy Birthday to your son.
