Anyone Have to Take Their Child (Age 7) to a Cardiologist?

I picked up my daughter early from school today because she said it felt like someone was pounding on her chest, she was dizzy, & had blurred vision. This was all during reading & quiet time. As soon as I got her home I called her pediatrician & took her in this afternoon. The pounding stopped about 15 mins after I got her home. The doctor didn't really reassure me & was bothered by the fact that this happened when she was sitting down. After we left the office we ran to the grocery store to pick up a few things (Dr. said there were no restrictions). While we were in the store she said it felt like someone was hitting her (not pounding) on the chest, so I put her in the back of the cart & we left. It stopped soon afterward. We have an appointment on Wednesday with a pediatric cardiologist. So has anyone else dealt with anything like this? Right now as I am typing this she is bouncing off the wall as if nothing is wrong...?

In regards to stress or something bothering her,one of the first things I did ask her today was whether or not something was wrong. She is very vocal. She usually always lets me know if something is wrong & boy do I hear about it:)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok 5 Dr.'s appointments later, all testing(ekg, etc.) came back normal. I finally changed pediatricians & went to a holistic pediatrician. Pretty sure she has reflux. We are treating with apple cider vinegar, mirelax, probiotics, & a digestive tea for children. Hopefully this will do the trick...

I had a friend go through this with her son when he was 7-8. Actually, they had no idea anything was wrong with him. But, his father and uncle both had heart problems that they determined were hereditary. They had the son checked out and he had it too. He had surgery over the summer to correct it. He recovered incredibly quickly with no ill side effects at all and is back to all of his regular activities. Happy and healthy.

The important thing for the mom was doing a lot of research into cardiologists and finding someone she was very, very comfortable with. The one she found had an excellent bedside manner with the son and was great at explaining things to the parents.

Of course, the entire thing was very nerve-racking and scary, but the doctor did help put her at ease and everything worked out really well.

I hope your daughter is ok!

Our son saw a cardiologist, but only as a preventative step since he has ADHD. He had an echocardiogram to make sure it was safe to take medication. He's also had an EKG. Neither test is a big deal. The echocardiogram takes a bit of time but isn't painful. EKG was more fascinating than anything for our son because of all of the wires.

Sounds like a good move in your daughter's situation to see a cardiologist. However, I'd say if another episode comes up, you might go the ER for your own peace of mind.

Hi,

I have not had this happen with my children, however it sounds like something similar that happened to my husband a couple of years ago. He was at work, sitting down, he felt like someone was pounding on his chest, got very dizzy, almost threw up. They rushed him to the ER and they could not find anything. We scheduled an appointment with a cardiologist and they hooked him up to a 24 hour monitor (portable). The results came back normal. Turns out, it was INTENSE stress and panic attacks. The bank he was working for was going under (remember the beginning of the market crash) and he was just so worried and never expressed it. I am only telling you this because maybe your daughter, even at 7, is having stress or panic attacks. Are they doing state testing at school? Does she have problems with any children at school? Don't dismiss her pain/feeling as just stress by any means, but sit and talk with her. Maybe you can fill the doctor in when she goes to see him.

I wish you all the best of luck!

Not me personally but my GF had to bring he then 6 yr old in. If they can't decide what ails your daugter most likely they will have her wear a monitor for 24-48 hrs to see if the monitor reads anything unusual and you will have to journal her activities. I wish you luck, hopefully it's nothing, maybe just an anxiety attack, which for the record does not occur during the "upset" but later on when all is calm.

Last summer my 6 year old son had tubes put in his ears. During surgery, the anesthesiologist said his heartbeat was very slow and irregular for just a few beats, so we were sent to a pediatric cardiologist. The appointment was extremely long, and they did tons of tests right in the office. My son is fine. I don't know why his heartbeat was so odd during surgery.

You're doing the right thing by getting your daughter checked out. Hopefully she was just over-excited or something simple like that, but if not you need to know what the problem is so that she can be treated.

I hope all goes well on Wednesday.

It sounds as if you're doing the right thing. Even though at times nothing seems to be wrong, something could be wrong. You want to find out what it is!

I know you don't want to worry your daughter, but be sure she tells you (or her teacher) whenever her heart goes funny. You could call the cardiologist's office and ask if there's anything special you need to notice between now and the appointment, and (if this is in the back of your mind) when you should to take her to the ER instead of waiting. They know about worried mamas as well as sick children.

One of my granddaughters was born with a heart problem, so cardiologists are like family to her. She gets checked and tested with strict regularity. You'd never know from the way she acts that she almost died as a baby; the faster, higher, or louder she is, the better she likes it!
But they caught the problem early and dealt with it (she had a valve transplant at six weeks), and she and her family still deal with it. It's part of the adventure.

My son was actually born with a heart defect and had surgery so we go every 6 months. my other son is 2 years older and doesn't have cardiac issues, but recently, while laying down watching tv, told me that it felt like hammers hitting his chest. I took his pulse and put my ear to his chest. He was fine - took him to the cardiologist and got a full workup and his heart is healthy. The first thing to do it take her pulse if this happens again. Then you should take her to the er. Is she sweating when this happens? flushed? short of breath? take note of these things as you can tell the doc when you get her in. Hopefully it is nothing and she is going to be perfect!! Good luck and please let us know what happens

I had to take our daughter to a pediatric cardio when she was 6 because she passed out at school and her pulse was very low. It turned out to be because she had an autoimmune thyroid disease and eventually it affects the heart.....later down the road I started having my heart pounding and racing and it turned out I have autoimmune thyroid disease too. Hers was very low, mine was very high. I don't know if you have anything to worry about...they will get it figured out. Try not to stress too much. Good luck!
