I am not sure if you can sprain one but if you can you need to baby it long enough for it to heal and then get the flexibility back. Not allowing a sprain to heal before working it out re-injures it taking longer to heal.
I believe that's what i have and i want to heal it quickly........its really messing up my fitness routine.
LIV.i dont think its a tear because i cant pinpoint a moment i hurt it, it just developed overnight and its not a crick, definitely my rotator cuff. But im pregnant and i work out every day......i read you can sprain your joints easily while pregnant because we are more flexible during this time.

Don't do anything that causes it to hurt. You need to let it heal completely.
Use the ice and heat.
My boss had a tear. She had surgery. It's not quite the same.
If it's a sprain, here is a link with some treatment advice which includes: rest, cold compresses, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
How do you know it is not a tear?
I've had mine go out on me a few times. You have to baby it. Ice it, heat it, massage it, and don't use it for usually a couple of weeks. I hate when it happens and generally happens because of over use.
I have a sprained rotator cuff right now, made a great soccer save at the expense of my shoulder. I have an MRI next week but the dr doesn't think it's torn, the MRI is just to rule out a tear before I start therapy. It's been 8 weeks, it still hurts like a biotch, all the time, from a dull ache to a sharp stab depending on what I do. Ice while it's acute, then alternate ice & heat once it's no longer acute. Do use it within your limitations, the biggest threat from shoulder injuries is a frozen shoulder due to lack of use - frozen shoulders require surgery to fix them, they have to put you out to break the adhesions so you can move your arm again. Mine has slowly been getting better, but it's really slow - I'm 8 weeks post injury and still in pain. My range of motion and strength are good (dr credits that to the fact that I did my exercises and kept using it) but it still hurts a bunch. Sorry, know that's not what you wanted to hear.
