Hi Moms, I have a problem with breaking my vacuums way to soon! I've been looking into finding a good one I will like and wont break right away. I came across an ad and web site for orecks... they look real good and the testimonials look real good. But I figured the trust test is what you Moms think about them :0) I have 2 cats 2 dogs 2 kids and lets not forget a hubby, and ponds and a creek for everyone to get messy in so lets just say my vacuum really needs to be tough LOL! Thanks for any info you can offer.

We dont' have a oreck but I have gone through about 4 vacuums in the past 4 years- needless to say they all don't do well.

We decided to go to an actual vacuum store rather than walmart, kmart etc... He recommended Simplicity- which we got and I really like it so far. I got it in January. It has a 3 year warranty & seems to do quite well. I asked him about the orecks & he said they have great advertising and they are a really light weight machine which is great but he said that they didn't use quality parts. Not sure exactly how much is true but he did go over a little bit about the roller & pulled it out & said to make sure when you are buying a vacuum that you don't purchase one with a plastic roller. Hair etc.. can get caught in there & then cause problems for you. Anyway- my suggestion- look around, go to a vacuum store & get some advice from someone who knows a bit about vacuums. You can always shop around til you find the store & the person you feel knows there stuff. :)
Best of luck.

Hi S.!

I personally have the purple dyson that is for pets. I really like it but after I got it I started getting consumer reports and saw that there were other vaccums that ranked higher and cost less. So even though I do love my dyson...I kind of wish I would have looked at the consumer reports rating first. If you don't belong to consumer reports you can join online and look up vaccums and read all about them. www.consumerreports.org

FYI I just went on and looked at Oreck. Not ranked real high. :( If you don't want to join let me know and I am sure I can email you some info on vaccums from the site. :)

HTH,

J.

Hi S.,
I don't know anything about the Oreck Vacuums but I just wanted to say that I have a Dyson (the regular yellow one) and I would not recommend it to anyone. It only works well if you have a large area of carpet with no stairs or furniture in the way. Otherwise it is very awkward and won't fit under any furniture.
Hope you find a good machine,
B.

I have had my Oreck for over 6 years, and I really like it. Best things about it - It is so lightweight and easy to carry up and down stairs; and it can go from carpet to bare floors without any kind of adjustment. I vacuum my carpeted hallway and then head right into the kitchen (laminate floor) to vacuum the crumbs from under the table. I don't have pets so I can't say how it is for that. But I would buy one again!

lol not offended but I do love my Kirby. We have two dogs, a cat, two kids and my hubby as well. it's a high traffic house and lots of pet hair. The kirby is heavy I will admit that BUT I love that it has a great suction on it and I can get the dog hair off my couch. no easy feat.
I was looking into a Dyson, the price on them has come down A LOT since I first started looking and I have several friends who LOVE thier dyson that does the pet hair. One friend swears it does better than their kirby did--and I'm not doubting it might. I don't know much about Oreks. but that is what I know about the other vacuums! lol. I've had my kirby for 5 years now...still sucks. ;)

Hi S.,

I had an Oreck for a few years. It was a great vacuum. I had a rabbit (that had run of the house) and it was great for picking up the hair and spilled food pellets and such. It is nice because it is only 8 lbs, and small enough for me to keep in the coat closet (the vacuum, not the rabbit - lol). When we moved here from Alaska we bought a Kirby (big mistake - no offense to the ppl that like those) and I have regretted it ever since! I DID notice that my Oreck wasn't picking up as well, which is why we traded it in (I had it 6 years or so?) but I think if I had taken it to get serviced it probably would have been fine. I am planning on purchasing a lighter weight vacuum (the Kirby is a bear to lug around) and will most likely go with another Oreck. It is also nice that they give you a bunch of stuff with purchase. My hubby still uses the cordless iron all the time! Hope that helps. :)

My mom has an Oreck and a Dyson. She prefers the Dyson, as do I. I have had mine for almost 2 years and the part I love is that are no parts to buy or service dates to remember. About every 6 months I clean the clean-able filter but thats it! My good friend has an Oreck and loves it but I am a Dyson fan.

Good luck with your decision.
