My 6 month old daughter is going to have surgery a week from today to reconstruct her kidney system. She will have to have a neprostomy for a while. I'm really starting to worry about it and I have so many questions about dailiy living with the tube. I've scoured the internet but can't find any support. Is there anyone out there who has been through this that could answer my questions and offer advice?

Im so sorry about the pending surgery. A quick search of "pediatric nephrostomy" led me to the Childrens Hospital in Boston.

I would demand a meeting with the surgeon as soon as possible to discuss the entire procedure and plan for post-op treatment. Also any advice she or he may have for community support. You may qualify for a visiting nurse. This is major reconstructive surgery which obviously needs to be done but I would get some face time with the Dr. preferable without your children there to minimize distractions. Bring paper and pen and at the end ask when and how would be the best time to follow up if there are any further questions after you and your husband have had time to digest the info.

Good luck!

Hi A.:

As a Practitioner, I would need to know more about the situation with your baby's kidneys in order to fully assist. Was there trauma to her body in utero or once born? Is there an infection? Those are just a sample of questions I would ask to find out more and assist with natural therapy wellness recommendations.

My office is available to assist you via a consultation in-office (Chelsea, NY) or over the telephone. I would prefer in person. Learn more about the service at www.wholecreations.com/wombfull.html and contact to schedule an appointment.

Sending you and your family well wishes,

N.

I am not familiar with this procedure but both my kids were in the NICU after birth. Do ask the doctor your questions but also talk to the hospital social worker and the case manager for your daughter (often a nurse or nurse practioner). They usually have more time to talk with you and it is their job to know and help set up support services like a visiting nurse and support groups. I was unimpressed with the discharge planning with my son and I said so upfront when my daughter was at the same hospital. As a result the communication and discharge planning improved noticeably. I wish you and your daughter all the best.

A.,

Unfortunately I have no advice for you, but I wanted to offer my support. I would suggest making sure you understand what is required to care for your daughter BEFORE the day of her surgery and keep in close contact with her doctors and their staff.

Best of luck to your little girl.
