Anyone Given Liquid Calcium to Infant(3 1/2 Months) for Reflux??

I am constantly looking into treatments/remedies for my daughter's silent reflux. She is currently on Zantac which only seems to work well the week after we up the dose. I really want to get her off this medication but still keep her at least as comfortable as she is on it. She is also going to a chiropractor a couple times a week-no dramatic results with that yet. I have read about people giving liquid calcium to babies. Has anyone out there given a baby liquid calcium for reflux? If so, how much? Is it safe? other info? Any other remedies that helped baby's reflux?
thanks so much-J.

Please google "reflux and chiropractic care".....I have a chiropractor who has very successfully treated infants (in just a few treatments) and helped them overcome reflux.

He described it as a problem with the nervous system, and that it is very common.

Best wishes!

My son was on Zantac for his first six months, but I don't know anything about liquid calcium. What I do know is that on our pediatrician's recommendation, we let him sleep strapped in his bouncer (in his crib with the mattress all the way down so he couldn't fall out) with the vibration running and this helped him sleep way better than just raising one end of the mattress. Being upright is supposed to help keep the acid down. Best of luck and hang in there.

My son had colic/acid reflux. I did a full blown alternative medicine approach. Gripe water (can be purchased at Rainbow),Boiron makes all natural homeopathic medicine with absolutely no side effects for babies in the form of little water capsules that you break open and squirt into the baby's mouth(no food or water 15 minutes before and after administering), I changed my diet (no onions, garlic, tomatoes, anything acidic, no citrus, no nuts. I ate plenty of dill, parsley and even made chamomile tea w/dill for him to drink.) I also brought him to an excellent chiropractor religiously.

Here's a thought. Try putting the baby to sleep on a foam wedge. They sell them for way too much money on the internet, but I bought one for $3.00 at a fabric store. Having her sleep on an incline should help.

The good news is that it should go away by about four months. My son's pediatrician said that it's an under-developed gut.

place your finger horizontally under her sternum and xyphoid process ( where diaphram muscle is). gently and slowly compress and then traction down towards her belly button. HOld for 1-2 minutes. It could be that she is just needs more space for her digestion, and the nerve that runs through there is irritated. do it consistently, it may be uncomfortable for her, but it will bring relief

Dear J.:

I am no expert but if I were you, I would get that child off Zantac(DRUGS). What i did for my child much to the doctor's dismay was taking my child off of formula but he was a few months older than your child. We got a juicer and starting juicing fruits and vegetables. I also boiled lamb with the bone and gave him the water. I made my own baby food (pain in the neck) from fresh real food (organic if you can afford it) boiling mashing etc. Keep the liquid, it's full of minerals and vitamins. I guess I really don't know what "silent" reflux is but I would use your head and your heart and do what you think is best. Doctors will load your kid up with drugs, which you may guess, I despise. Any calcium you get should be 2 to 1. TWo parts magnisium to one part calcium. I don't know the dosage but whatever it says for an adult, drop it down to a couple of drops. Reflux is usually caused by a poor diet or some sort of digestion problem. Maybe you should take her to someone else until you get some answers. I also use a naurapath. I know they are expensive but I think well worth it. It makes me sick that your girl is on Zantac that is why i responded, I hope I gave you some ideas. One final thought, I use a myotherapist, they are muscle specialists but you would be surprized what they can do and heal. They are hard to find but miracle workers for many ailments. If you can't find one where you live, I know there are a couple in arizona and they may be able to steer you to one in your area.

Hi,

I know that you are probably not interested in other medicine, but here is my experience with my little girl who has the same issue. Zantac did not help and it made her constipate. The doctor switched her to Prevacid (resolvable tablet) which she takes with water once a day in the morning. Prevacid really helped her. In your daughter's case, even though the milk doesn't come out it still comes up to her throat, I think, and the acid irritates her throat, repeatedly. Studies have shown that untreated early childhood reflux has been linked with throat cancers later. We were also thinking about taking the homeopathic approach, but upon learning that we went with the medication. My daughter was on Prevacid for a year, and we recently stopped it because she is doing much better. Good luck!

look into acid reflux homeopathy. A good homeopath knows what to do and how to do it, and will go by HER current health and state of being when deciding on her treatment. Very important distinction from the ready-mis from Boiron that is made by ”one size fits all”. By all means, try it, but if it does not work, go to see professional. acid reflux is not just about supplements and herbs. It is also about balancing the harmony of your body - i guess that is why you do chiro...so use all angles - homeopathy is for balance as well. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions – starting from your pregnancy. It should be a long and detailed interview, so chose someone who is devoted to this healing modality alone, not someone who “also does” homeopathy. Letters CCH after the last name is a good start looking for qualified homeopath.
Good Luck

I found this on another blog on yahoo.
My 4 month old daughter was diagnosed with reflux at two weeks old. I burped her after every single ounce, rise the head of her bed at an angle(helps keep the food in the belly). I held her for 30 minutes after feeding her. Her doctor also put her on the Zantac..but what they are not telling you is the the Zantac only helps with the burning. The reflux to them is like acid reflex to us. It causes burning in the back of the throat. try lying them on there left side..it helped my daughter out alot. Make sure your bottle has a slow flow nipple so your baby doesn't gag. And ask your babies doctor about Enfamil AR formula it helps too. And if your baby isn't keeping that down add the rice cereal too it, Its heavier and my baby held that down.
(It goes on with the following-)
Thank you so much for taking the time to help. I switched him to a Dr. Brown's bottle with a slow flow nipple and that has helped. He actually took a full feed and kept it down.

Chiropractic approach was also recommended. Just be patient. It can take some time.

Here's another blog. Scroll down to Minnie. She gives a lot of links, which I admit I did not check, but it sure looks like she did her homework.

I normally advise unfiltered apple cider vinegar for acid reflux. It sounds counterintuitive but it works. I looked to see if anyone had used it for an infant as young as your little on and I did find a posting on earthclinic.com

The older women in my family told me to take my 3 month old daughter off Axid and Flonase and try organic Apple Cider Vinegar instead. I don't want to stunt her growth, so I decided to give it a try. I bought a bottle of organic ACV and a glass dropper bottle. I filled the glass dropper bottle half with the Apple Cider Vinegar and half distilled water. I gave her one dropperful twice a day - the same times I gave the Axid. Although she gagged and fussed and cried at the taste of it, within 2 days the acid reflux symptoms seemed to be gone. Unfortunately, my husband cared for her on the 3rd day and refused to put her through the "taste trauma" of the ACV'and gave her the Axid instead. That was 3 days ago, and she's having horrible acid reflux still (while on Axid, not ACV). I'm about to switch her back to the ACV But, is there any advice to helping the flavor of the vinegar? She's too young for honey and it is horrible watching your baby react to the unpleasant taste."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Yes, my common apple cider vinegar remedy for acid reflux is always to add a little baking soda to neutralize the acid taste. Baking soda not only reduces the acid reflux, it also reduce the acid tastes. In tough cases of people who found that ACV didn't work, most do work if you add baking soda too. Just add enough to reduce to a taste you think your baby likes."

I hope this helps. I don't know anything about giving liquid calcium for an infant, but maybe in all of these posting you will find something that works for you.

Too much calcium can cause various problems with bone growth to cardiac arhythmias. I suggest doing what the others suggest . Zantac , however, inhibits the acid pumps of the stomach it is not "pain relief" per say .

Hard and fast rules :

Smaller , more frequent feedings.
Keep her upright after feeding , lying on side or back promotes liquids rising up .
Thicken formulas with rice cereal and burp every ounce
Keep up the Zantac and ask your pediatrician about something for pain relief.

She will grow out of it , usually, by 6 to 8 months ( around the time she is able to sit up well). If not, have her referred to a Pediatric gastroenterologist to make sure she doesn't have a sructural problem with her gut.

Good Luck !
